My computer won't boot up, charge or cut on. New cord, nothing wrong with port, etc

@Teresca, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP laptop is not powering on, charging, or showing any signs of life, even with a new power cord and a working charging port. Let’s walk through some steps to help isolate and resolve the issue.

Perform a Hard Reset

This helps clear any residual electrical charge that may be preventing startup.

For laptops with removable battery:

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery and AC adapter.
  5. Try powering on.

For laptops with non-removable battery:

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Try powering on.

Check the Power LED Indicators

  • Plug in the charger and observe any LED lights near the charging port or keyboard.
  • If no lights turn on, try a different wall outlet or HP-certified adapter if available.

Inspect for Signs of Life

  • Listen for fan noise, keyboard backlight, or screen flicker.
  • If the laptop is completely dead, proceed to the next step.

Try a BIOS Recovery (if applicable)

Some HP laptops support BIOS recovery via key combinations:

  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release the power button but continue holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  • If successful, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

Test with Minimal Hardware

  • Disconnect all peripherals (USB devices, external monitors, etc.).
  • If possible, remove RAM and SSD/HDD and reseat them.

If none of the above steps work, the issue may be with The DC-in jack (even if it looks fine externally) or The motherboard or power circuitry. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.

I hope this helps.

No that didn't help but my husband had an old cord plus brick and it charged right up. New plug didn't work.  Thanks anyway

@Teresca, Thanks for the update! I'm really glad to hear your husband's old charger worked and got the laptop powered up again.

It sounds like the new charger might not be compatible or could be faulty despite appearing fine. For future reference, here are a couple of quick tips when buying or replacing HP laptop chargers:

Charger Compatibility Checklist

  • Wattage & Voltage Match: Ensure the new charger matches the original specs (e.g., 65W, 90W, 135W, etc.).
  • Connector Type: HP uses different barrel sizes and USB-C standards, make sure it fits snugly and is the correct type.
  • Genuine HP Part: Third-party chargers may not deliver consistent power or may lack safety protections.

I hope this helps!

If my response resolves your issue, please click “Accepted Solution” to help others find the answer. Also, don’t forget to click the “Yes” button to say thanks!

Take care and have a great day.
