I have my laptop set to go into sleep mode when I close the lid.
Occasionally, the laptop won't turn on the next time I open the lid.
If you plug in the power adapter briefly until the Windows logo appears,
the computer starts without any problems.
You can then unplug it immediately because the battery is fully charged anyway.
When this error occurs, the laptop always shuts down and restarts completely,
not from sleep mode. A hard reset didn't change anything.

Hi @Matthias61

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for describing the issue so clearly. It’s understandably frustrating when a device that should respond instantly from sleep instead behaves as if it’s been powered off entirely.

Based on your description, this sounds like a power state transition problem—where the system fails to resume from sleep and instead performs a cold boot.

Here are several steps you can try to restore proper sleep behavior and avoid needing to plug in the adapter each time:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can interfere with sleep/wake transitions.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options
  • Click Choose what the power buttons do
  • Select Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended)
  • Save changes and restart the notebook

2. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware or drivers can cause sleep mode failures.

3. Reset Power Plan Settings

Corrupted power profiles can lead to erratic sleep behavior.

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options
  • Select your active plan and click Change plan settings
  • Choose Restore default settings for this plan
  • Confirm and restart the notebook

4. Check Lid Close Action

Ensure the lid action is correctly configured.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options
  • Click Choose what closing the lid does
  • Confirm that Sleep is selected for both battery and plugged-in modes

5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This checks for deeper hardware faults.

  • Restart the notebook and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears
  • Press F2 to launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
  • Run the System Test > Extensive Test to check battery and motherboard behavior

If the issue persists even after these steps, it may help to temporarily switch the lid action to “Do nothing” and manually initiate sleep via the Start menu. This can isolate whether the lid sensor or sleep trigger is misbehaving.

Let me know if you'd like help locating your model-specific BIOS or driver files. I'm here to support you through this.
