Hi,
I just purchased model 17-AN012DX which is HP - OMEN by HP 17.3" Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 12GB Memory - AMD Radeon RX 580 - 1TB Hard Drive
I want to install an SSD drive specifically a Samsumg Sm951 Mz-hpv2560. Is a 256G SSD.
At first I was not sure if my laptop had the possibility to connect an SSD disk in addition to its HDD, but after reading this post, I understand that it can be done:
But I see that there may be some compatibility problems with some SSD models; therefore I wanted to ask if this model, Samsumg Sm951 Mz-hpv2560, works well.
I want to clarify that I try to look for the model suggested in the mentioned post (Samsung SM961 M.2) but sadly in my country it is not available.
Thanks you for your time and expertise.
Regrads and Merry Christmas!
Alex

I write this just to help someone.
I was able to operate the SSD slot with a Samsung PM961. I also know that it works with Samsung - 960 EVO by other users' experience. Anyway, I think it can work with any SSD that has NVMe protocol.
I am now running windows 10 from the SSD.

Alex

Hi 2AlexArg,
Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
I understand you want to update the SSD Drive.
Don't worry I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Any particular reason for updating the SSD?
Find the bellow tested and the supported drive, these are compatible with your pc.
HP doesn't suggest to upgrade or downgrade your PC, you can do it only at your own discretion.
Keep me posted, how it goes!
If the information I've provided was helpful.
Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Raj, thanks.
I want to install an SSD because the HDD does not meet my expectations and is a bottleneck for the performance of my laptop.
The list that you are showing me, is the one that is found in the maintenance manual, and it is not very precise. For example, the Samsung 960 Evo 250gb disc (M.2 NVMe) complies with the list you mention, but it is not entirely compatible. Here is a post where an expert explains it:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Omen-17-AN012DX-from-Best-Buy/td-p/6273977
So, I need to know what are the specific brands and models that are 100% compatible with my Omen 17-AN012DX laptop.
Thanks again,
Alex.

Hi! @AlexArg, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @Raj1788, but he is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.
I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.
I have checked the records and the m.2 SSD Samsung Sm951 Mz-hpv2560, should be supported on your laptop.
However, Since HP has not tested with this particular model of M2. SSD.
You can try the list of m.2 SSD on your PC as recommended by HP.
M.2 SATA SSD, PCIe NVMe TLC
256 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC PA 847109-022
512 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC PA 847110-019
128 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC PA 912322-005
Refer the laptop user guide for more information.
Note: Refer page 24 for more information.

MrRobot thank you for your answer.
I've contacted the three resellers that you have in Argentina, and none of them has the SSDs. One of them told me that here in Argentina they have only some replacement parts and do not have SSD, and that it was best for me to buy a similar one online...
Anyway, when I search the part on the HP sites it gives me this "This part is not yet available for purchase"
I can not buy your SSD and I do not want to buy a disk online that does not work for my laptop, and that's why I need your help.
The three SSD you mention are TLC, and as far as I could read, the Samsung 960 Evo uses 2-bit per-cell multi-level cell (MLC) so maybe there is the problem? That's the only difference I could find.
I do not know, I'm a bit lost in the dark here.
Regards,
Alex.

@AlexArg, Thanks for your quick response and time.
I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.
As I mentioned in my previous thread Samsung Sm951 Mz-hpv2560 should be supported on your laptop.
However, since HP has not tested with this particular model of SSD with its laptop.
It's just a concern there might be some issues.
But you can go ahead and replace the SSD.
Hope this answers your query!
