I want to change the boot options so that I can get a dual boot windows 11 / linux.
For this, I shoukd disable the secure boot option. I found it easily but in order to save the changes, I should enter a 4 digit pass code and hit enter. If I don't want the change to be saved, I should just hit the escape key.
I am unable to enter the requested pass code. The system simply does not take it. I checked with assuming the keyboard would be set differently (azerty or qwertz) but the system just does not want to take any input except the escape key.
Any idea how to have it corrected.
For your info, in another forum, someone suggested to enable the legacy boot + disable the secure boot but it does not work for me either. I am still stuck on the message 021 with only the ESC key working.
Also, the laptop is brand new, the only thing I did so far was downloading Skype and Sugou (to be able to type chinese characters). I did not even set any user password.
Thanks in advance for the suggestion

Hi @Creed7

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue related to the BIOS/UEFI settings and Secure Boot configuration, and you’re unable to input the required passcode to disable Secure Boot. Since the system is not accepting input, here are some potential solutions you can try:

1. Reset BIOS/UEFI to Default Settings

If the laptop is still brand new, it might have a default password set or an issue with its configuration. You can reset the BIOS/UEFI settings to their default values, which might clear the passcode:

  • Power off your laptop.
  • Press the power button and immediately press the Esc key or F10 (depending on your laptop model) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.
  • Once in the BIOS/UEFI menu, look for an option like Load Defaults or Reset to Default Settings (this option varies by manufacturer).
  • Select this option and confirm.
  • Save and exit the BIOS (usually by pressing F10 to save and exit).

This may reset the Secure Boot passcode and allow you to proceed with changes.

2. Clear the CMOS Battery (Hard Reset)

If resetting the BIOS does not work, you can perform a hard reset by clearing the CMOS, which will reset all BIOS/UEFI settings and likely remove any passwords or restrictions.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Turn off the laptop and unplug it from any power sources.
  2. Remove the battery (if it's removable).
  3. Open the back panel of the laptop (you may need to remove screws).
  4. Locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard (it looks like a small coin cell battery).
  5. Remove the CMOS battery for 5–10 minutes to ensure the BIOS settings are cleared.
  6. Reinstall the CMOS battery, close the back panel, and reconnect the power.

Power on the laptop, and check if the BIOS settings have been reset. This should clear the passcode.

I hope this helps.
