When I would play more demanding games (ie Red Dead Redemption 2) my laptop would freeze and I'd have to manually restart it. one time when booting after a crash there was a screen that popped up saying that i had a SART error, but when i ran diagnostics, it said that everything was fine. I noticed that the disk manager couldn't find my boot drive only my extra hard drive.

then I disabled the Optane drive and ran crystal Disk info and found that the Optane drive was running at 87 C. but now there are no more lockups of freezes. do i have a bad Optane chip?

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:  

 

Basic PC Hardware Diagnostics is a basic user interface that allows you to run pass/fail tests on the processor, memory, storage, hard drive, battery, and system board.

NOTE: When using Basic PC Hardware Diagnostics, you cannot navigate using the mouse or touchpad.

HP Basic Systems Diagnostics

To enter Basic PC Hardware Diagnostics, hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer. Turn on the computer and press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second, until HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI - BIOS displays.

NOTE: The black screen (BIOS) version of the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics displays if the PC does not detect the full UEFI version installed on a USB drive or hard drive partition. If the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI (with a white screen) displays, use the steps in Run tests when Windows doesn't start in this document.

Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select a test, and then press Enter.

After starting the test, two screens display: test in progress, and after the test, a pass or fail screen.

After running each test, write down the information provided so you have it available when you contact HP Customer Support.
