Last week I had booted up my PC and was browsing it doing the usual stuff when it started loading things very slowly. I was trying to figure out wath was wrong. While doing that I did a Hard Drive Quick Check in the Bios. It said failure. I didn't believe it was something serious, and reinstalled Windows. It was behaving very sketchy. What I mean is sometimes it loaded things very quickly and sometimes very slowly. I didn't think it was serious till today. I was using my PC casually when I got a blue screen of death (BSOD). Then the PC restarted and while booting up I got one more BSOD. And it never could boot up again. Just a black screen no matter how much I wait. Not even a loading screen. While trying to figure out what the problem is I did a full hard disk scan and it said failure again. Now I don't really know what to do. Is the hard disk broken? Please, give me suggestions and answers, cause I'm very worried about my hdd. Thanks to everyone who helps.

Hi! @IGR_Games05, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I understand you have issues booting into the PC and the hard drive test failed with a failure ID.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Have you backed up the data on your PC?
Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.
Most HP Notebook PCs have SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) capable hard drives. SMART is firmware that resides on the hard drive and continuously monitors drive parameters such as performance and error rates. SMART uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent.
Common SMART errors are:
-
Hard disk failure is imminent.
-
A hard drive in the system reports that it may fail.
-
Smart failure imminent, back up your data
-
Error 1720 Imminent Hard Drive Failure
-
HP Hardware Diagnostic errors that start with HD521
The use of SMART does not prevent all hard drive failures, but it can give you the opportunity to back up your personal files and replace the hard drive before it fails.
If you are able to boot into your PC try backing up the files before the hard drive fails completely.
Since the hard drive test on your PC failed the error message indicates an issue with the sectors or data, on the physical disks on the hard drive, has gone faulty.
Please replace the hard drive at the earliest to avoid hard drive failure.
Also, to backup data from a faulty hard drive would difficult.
So, I suggest you can try contacting the best buy or Walmart and check for data backup options. As they would use a third party software to backup the data.
Refer this article to further troubleshoot hard drive issues on your PC. Click Here
If you still have issues after trying out the steps, it is a hardware issue with the PC.
I will share you few details through a private message. Please watch your inbox for more information.
Hope this answers your query!
Have a great day! 🙂

Thank you for helping, but will it be a problem if I put an SSD inside instead of putting an HDD? I know SSDs perform better, so it would be nice to put one. More specifically I mean the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB.

Yes, you can install an SSD on the PC instead of a regular SATA drive.
However, I see there an M.2 SSD slot available on the PC. You can use the M.2 drive which is a lot faster than an SSD drive. Please find the part details below.
One M.2 socket for SSD
Solid State Drive (not illustrated)
Solid state drive 256 GB M2 SATA 801479-001
Solid state drove 256 GB M2 SATA-3 801473-001
Refer the laptop user guide for more information. Click Here
Note: Refer page 44 for more information.
Also, you can purchase the part from the HP part store using this link. Click Here
Hope this helps!

M.2!? Ho Ho nice! I may actually get it. I just have one little question about assembling the system. So to access the inside you remove the keyboard panel. My question is does the assembling process work the same way? I mean you connect the cables, put the panel back, put the screws back in and the keyboard panel will stay in place without going out again, right? And also is the slot placed on the top where you can see it when putting away the keyboard or I need to flip the motherboard to see it?

You did a Marvellous job by trying the steps recommended previously.
As you mentioned the real-time check failed.
Yes, it means the hard drive is about the fail. Please replace the hard drive on your PC at the earliest.

Thank you for all the support so far! Sorry for adding more and more questions to the main topic, but when I look at the user guide I see that the HDD has some kind of cage where it stays, but the SSD is probably smaller, so how is it gonna fit properly? Oh and also I think the HDD just totally died. When I try to boot it it gives me a blue screen of death 2 times in a row saying CRITICAL PROCESS DIED.

If you are installing a regular SSD on the PC. You need to install the SSD using a hard drive caddy.
You can search in google or any online computer store for 2.5 inches hard drive caddy.
Hope this answers your query!
