@JonAnderson1979, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

I'm very sorry for your loss. On behalf of HP, please accept our sincere condolences.

I’ll do my best to assist you. If you need to unlock your wife's HP laptop so it can be used by your daughter, the process will depend on how the device is secured. Here are the common scenarios and steps:

If the laptop is secured with a Windows login password:

1. Microsoft Account (most common on Windows 10/11)

If your wife used a Microsoft account to log in (e.g., email and password), you can reset the password through Microsoft:

Go to Recover your account

Choose "I forgot my password" and follow the prompts.

Note: You’ll need access to her recovery email or phone number to reset it.

2. Local Account (no email address shown at login)

If it’s a local account (not tied to an email), and you don’t have the password, then you’ll likely need to reset Windows or perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
