HP Pavilion Laptop PC 14-dv0000 (190U5AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Yesterday night when I tried to turn on my laptop, the power led was on, the fans were turning, but the screen stayed black. I forced it to shut down. I tried to turn it on again and it did turn on, I logged in and then it froze completely so I forced it again to shut down. I tried to turn it on a third time, but again the power led was on, the fans were turning, but the screen stayed black. It has been like this since yesterday. I tried the cold hard reset, holding the power button for 2 minutes then turn it on again, I tried to connect to an external screen and all of this several times without success. The charging led is working, all the other leds aren't. I think I can hear the hard disk turning as well. Any advice will be very much appreciated, thank you.

(Pavilion 14, Windows 10 Home)

@Lucia43, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it must be when your HP Pavilion 14-dv0000 won’t boot and only shows a black screen. Based on your description, it sounds like the system is powering on but not completing POST (Power-On Self-Test), which could be due to a hardware or firmware issue. Let’s go through a few steps to try and resolve this:

Perform a Hard Reset (again, with battery and peripherals removed)

Since you’ve already tried a cold reset, let’s ensure it’s done with all peripherals disconnected:

  • Disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Remove any USB devices, SD cards, or external displays.
  • If your model has a removable battery, take it out.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the AC adapter and try powering on.

Try a BIOS Recovery

Sometimes the BIOS may become corrupted. HP laptops support a BIOS recovery feature:

  • Turn off the laptop completely.
  • Press and hold Windows + B keys, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B for another 5–10 seconds.
  • If successful, you should see the BIOS recovery screen.

Check with an External Monitor (again)

You mentioned trying this, but just to confirm:

  • Connect an external monitor via HDMI.
  • Power on the laptop and press F4 or Windows + P to toggle display modes.
  • If the external screen works, the issue may be with the laptop’s display or display cable.

Perform a Component Test via HP Hardware Diagnostics (if accessible)

If you can get any display at all:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the System Tests and Component Tests (especially for memory and hard drive).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
