Hi all.
Can I ask for some help please.
I have a laptop.
HP Pavilion 15. It's a few years old now.
I've not used it for a while.
I turned it on today & it gave a issue..
Can't boot & gave a code f30, i think.
So i did a HDD & memory test, came back ok.
I did put a new 4gb memory in the underneath.
The screen said to update bios boot & it can be done via a donor pc & a usb flash drive with a bios downloaded to that.
I have done this & inserted it into the HP 15, but then it asks for a password.
This is where I fail ...no password.. I looked online & there is a bios password reset, it says to enter a password 3 times then it gives a code, the code begins with a letter then 8 digits after that. But my HP 15 only gives me 8 numbers.
Can you please help.
The HP 15, is my system..it as not been used for about 1-2 years due to these smartphones, I got it out due to holiday hotels & I wanted to print off my paperwork but can't open the system.
Thanks for any help.

Hi folk.
This hp 15.
Would it have a bios battery inside.?
I seen that if you remove the bios battery then replace it after few minutes that it can reset & you then need to update all the system.
Is that correct.,
The laptop is.
Hp pavilion 15 - n270sa, build date 2014 .
The label on the back also says ...HP protect smart (all 1 word , if that means anything).
Thanks.

Hi.
I striped down the laptop & found the little bios battery.
& at the same time the machine power jack port is loose, everytime I was plugging into the main power lead into it it was loose so Ive ordered 1 & il change that while the machine is striped.
There was another issue with it but as I not used the machine in a year or I can't remember, so for the price of a few pounds I've got a replacement HDD of same , then il inspect the HDD I take out & format it for my Xbox & use it as external storage (if it's ok).
Then for a screen ,/ HDD / power jack all less than 70€ the machine should be ok for another while.
Thanks

@trik, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
You're doing a great job trying to revive your HP Pavilion 15-n270sa. Let's walk through the issues and how to resolve them step-by-step.
CMOS Battery Found
Great job locating the CMOS battery! Removing it for a few minutes can reset some BIOS settings, but it will not remove a BIOS password on HP systems. Passwords are stored in secure EEPROM and not cleared by CMOS reset.
Power Jack Replacement
Loose power jack is a common issue on older Pavilion models. Replacing it is a good move and should restore stable charging. Make sure to:
- Use a compatible DC-in jack for Pavilion 15-n270sa
- Reassemble carefully to avoid damaging the motherboard
HDD Replacement
Swapping the HDD is fine, especially if the old one is unreliable. You can repurpose the old drive for Xbox storage after formatting it. Just ensure it's healthy using tools like:
- CrystalDiskInfo
- HP UEFI Diagnostics (press F2 at boot)
BIOS Recovery via USB
You mentioned trying BIOS recovery using a USB. That’s a valid method. Here’s the official HP guide:
- HP BIOS Recovery Using USB
Make sure:
- USB is formatted to FAT32
- BIOS file is downloaded from HP Drivers for Pavilion 15-n270sa
- Use the correct filename (e.g., HP_TOOLS folder or BIOS.bin depending on instructions)
Final Tips
Once the BIOS password is reset and the power jack/HDD are replaced:
- Reassemble the laptop
- Boot into BIOS (F10) and load defaults
- Install Windows via USB if needed
- Update all drivers from HP Support site Official HP® Support
BIOS Password Prompt
Your Pavilion is asking for a BIOS password after attempting a BIOS recovery. Since you don’t recall setting one, this is likely a power-on or BIOS administrator password that was set previously or triggered due to a security lock.
When you enter the wrong password 3 times, the system should display a "System Disabled" code. You mentioned it shows 8 digits only, without a leading letter. This is common on older HP models.
What You Can Do:
HP has a secure process to reset BIOS passwords, but it requires contacting HP Phone Support directly. Master passwords cannot be provided publicly for security reasons.
- Visit: Contact Official HP® Support - United Kingdom | HP® Support
- Select your country and product (HP Pavilion 15-n270sa)
- Choose “BIOS or Firmware” under topics
- Request a BIOS password reset using the system disabled code
I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.
Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
