HP ENVY 17-j188ez Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
Ubuntu LTS

Hi,

I'm still using this old laptop, but for some years I've been noticing a strange behavior: when rebooting from Ubuntu (version doesn't matter), sometimes the BIOS starts recovering itself (maybe once a month), which takes a long time and results in lost BIOS settings.

It appears to occur only if the "nouveau" display drivers are used. As far as I remember, it didn't happen when I tested with nVidia display drivers. Neither does it happen if rebooting from Windows 10.

I suspect it could as well have to do with my installed BIOS version. I have F.71, but I noticed that this version obviously had been withdrawn (due to some issues?). Only F.70 is available from HP download center. Unfortunately, the F.70 BIOS doesn't seem to allow downgrades.

Is there a way to force it by some command line options?
