HP Notebook 15-dy1031wm

1st I apologize due to my lack of technical knowledge.

So, my issue is, my laptop was working completely fine and the other day out of nowhere it turned off and now it won't turn on or even charge. Nothing was spilled on it, it wasn't in an area that was to hot/cold, nothing like that. It just turned off and now wont even begin charging. I can not turn it on period. Does anyone have any idea "Why" it may do this, or if its fixable? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Ruiz92986, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
No worries about technical knowledge—I'll guide you through the troubleshooting process step by step!

Possible Causes:

Since your HP Notebook 15-dy1031wm suddenly turned off and won't power on or charge, here are some possible reasons:

  1. Battery or Power Adapter Issue – The charger may have failed, or the battery could be faulty.
  2. Static Build-up (Power Drain) – Sometimes, electrical residue can prevent the laptop from turning on.
  3. Motherboard or Internal Component Failure – A hardware issue could be preventing power delivery.
  4. Overheat Shutdown – If it overheated, the laptop may have shut down for protection and failed to recover.
  5. BIOS or Firmware Glitch – A corrupted BIOS or firmware can prevent booting.

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Check the Charger and Power Supply

  • Inspect the charger for any damage (bent pin, frayed wire, or loose connections).
  • Try a different power outlet to rule out wall socket issues.
  • Use a different HP-compatible charger (if available) to see if the issue is with the adapter.

2. Perform a Hard Reset (Power Drain)

This clears static charge that may be preventing power delivery.

  • Step 1: Unplug the power adapter.
  • Step 2: Remove the battery (if removable).
  • Step 3: Press and hold the power button for 30-60 seconds.
  • Step 4: Plug the charger back in (without the battery) and try to turn it on.
  • Step 5: If it turns on, reinstall the battery and check if it charges.

3. Check for Power Indicators

  • Does the charging light turn on?
    • If no light, the issue may be with the adapter, battery, or charging circuit.
    • If light blinks, note the blinking pattern (it may indicate an error code).
  • Does the fan spin or any LED blink when pressing power?

4. Test Without the Battery (if removable)

  • If the battery is removable, take it out and try to power the laptop using just the charger.
  • If it works without the battery, the battery may be faulty.

5. Inspect for Loose or Damaged Components

  • If you feel comfortable, check if the DC jack (charging port) is loose—a broken port won’t allow charging.
  • If you recently heard clicking sounds, buzzing, or smelled burning, it could indicate a motherboard issue.

6. Attempt a BIOS Reset (If Power Partially Works)

If the power light turns on but the laptop doesn’t boot:

  • Hold Win + B and then press the power button for 10-15 seconds.
  • Release the buttons and see if the BIOS recovery menu appears.

When to Seek Repair

If your laptop shows no power at all, even after these steps, the issue is likely:
✔ A dead battery (replaceable)
✔ A faulty charger or charging port
Motherboard failure (requires repair or replacement)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
