Pavilion x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Bought a brand new HP Pavilion x360 (Model:14M-DW0023DX) and just trying to understand how the power button on the keyboard works.

If the computer is shutdown, I press the power button and let go, nothing happens for 3 seconds, then the LED turns on, and the computer boots up normally.

If the computer is in sleep mode, I press the power button and let go, nothing happens. I have to hold the power button down for 1 second before the power button LED turns on and the computer comes out of sleep.

Is this normal behavior? I can repeat this consistently, but the behavior between shutdown and sleep seems to be inconsistent. I have another laptop where the power button is on the keyboard also, and as soon as I press the button, the laptop boots up, and same if that laptop is in sleep mode.

I'm trying to determine if there is a hardware issue.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

By default, when you select the Sleep option or press the Power button, Windows enters sleep mode. This saves the current work session in memory and puts the computer in a low-power stateTo get the answer to this question, It's absolutely normal and a feature by design.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you for your reply. However, I'm asking from a hardware point of view. The computer is shutdown (not in sleep mode). I press the button and exactly 3 seconds later, the power button LED lights up and the computer starts to boot. Is that normal behavior?

To get the answer to this question, its a noramal behavior and nothing to worry about hardware

HP Support technicians are not aware - will this be communicated out? I believe this is not a new feature/configuration. I spent 2-3 hours with an HP Support technician who reset my bios, who re-did what the power buttons do through Windows, etc, and in the end said to send in the computer for repair. 🙄. Called Best Buy where I bought this from, and Best Buy Geek Squad had no clue as well. What will be done to communicate this out especially to HP Support techs?

Thank you for posting back.

If its a hardware related issue with the computer then the computer needs service. I would request you to contact our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out.

I'm not sure I follow - you just said this is expected behavior and now you are saying it could be a hardware problem. From your previous post I believe the exact words are " its a noramal behavior and nothing to worry about hardware".

I'm confused 😕

Thank you for posting back.

It is normal behaviour, as you've mentioned your computer wakes up from sleep mode in 3sec.

However, if you're experiencing any hardware related issue with the computer you can get it serviced under factory warranty.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
