I press the power button on my laptop and I see a white power icon light up for about 5 seconds, then turn off. This happens every time I press the button to turn my laptop on, and it never turns on.

Hi @KaidenL,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your laptop is experiencing a power issue. Here’s a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help you diagnose and potentially fix the problem:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
- Disconnect All External Devices: Unplug any external devices (USB drives, external keyboards/mice, etc.) from your laptop.
- Disconnect Power Supply: Unplug the AC adapter from your laptop.
- Remove the Battery (if applicable): If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
- Press and Hold Power Button: Press and hold the power button for about 15-30 seconds. This will discharge any remaining power and reset the laptop’s internal components.
- Reconnect Power Supply and Battery: Reinsert the battery (if removed) and reconnect the AC adapter.
- Try Powering On: Press the power button again to see if the laptop starts.
2. Check Power Supply
- Verify AC Adapter: Ensure the AC adapter is properly connected to both the laptop and the power outlet. Check for any visible damage to the adapter or the power cord.
- Try a Different Outlet: Plug the AC adapter into a different power outlet to rule out any issues with the outlet itself.
- Test the Adapter: If possible, use a different AC adapter compatible with your laptop to see if the issue is with the adapter.
3. Inspect the Battery
- Battery Check: If the laptop has a removable battery, try starting the laptop with the battery removed and the AC adapter connected. If it starts, the battery may be faulty.
- Battery Condition: If the battery is non-removable, ensure it is properly seated and try performing a hard reset as mentioned above.
4. Look for Indicator Lights or Sounds
- LED Indicators: Check if there are any other LED indicators or sounds (like beeps) when you try to power on the laptop. These could provide clues about the issue.
- Listen for Fans: Pay attention to any noises from the laptop, like fan spinning or hard drive activity, which can indicate that the laptop is attempting to boot.
5. Check for Hardware Issues
- Reseat RAM and Storage: If you’re comfortable with disassembling your laptop, try reseating the RAM and storage drives. Loose connections can sometimes prevent the laptop from starting.
- Inspect Internal Components: Look for any visible signs of damage or loose cables inside the laptop.
6. Perform a BIOS Reset
- Access BIOS: If your laptop briefly powers on, try accessing the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing the appropriate key (usually F2, F10, F12, or Esc) during startup.
- Reset BIOS Settings: If you can access BIOS, look for an option to reset to default settings. Save and exit.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
