Hello Supportteam,

I have a problem with my HP Omen W201ng. When I start it with a USB mouse or USB flash drive plugged in, a Caps Lock error code flashes five times and ends with a black screen.

If I unplug the USB mouse, it starts normally. If I have a USB fan connected, the PC starts normally. I can also start the PC without a mouse and then connect the mouse when OS is started.

Accessing the BIOS is not possible and immediately results in a black screen with no error message/no blinking.

Removing the hard drive did not improve the problem. I removed the battery and replaced the two RAM modules. A CMOS reset and Windows logo + V were successful, but I still cannot access the BIOS or start with a USB mouse.

Neither the boot menu nor the BIOS can be accessed. F2, ESC, and F9 result in a black screen.
Cold start / warm start / Bios start from OS isnt successful. BIOS version F.55 is installed. F.56 won't install with win logo + b + usb flash, and a black screen appears upon startup. F.54 with win logo + b + usb flash at least makes the PC bootable again, but F.55 remains installed. It seems as if access to the BIOS is denied. Any changes to F.54 or F.56 are also not possible. It seems to have a scecond problem initializing the USB drive during the post.

@MarcusZufall, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Hard Reset

Power off the laptop.

Unplug the power and remove the battery (if removable).

Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain any power.

Reconnect the power and battery, then try turning it on.

Try BIOS Recovery Again

Download the latest BIOS from HP’s support website.

Create a bootable USB with the BIOS file on it.

Turn off the laptop, then hold Windows + B keys.

While holding those keys, press the power button.

If successful, BIOS should update automatically.

Check BIOS Settings (if you can access BIOS)

If you get into BIOS, disable Legacy USB and Fast Boot.

Disable Secure Boot.

Try restoring BIOS to default settings.

Boot with No USB Devices

Disconnect all USB devices (keyboard, mouse, etc.).

Try booting up with only the power cable connected.

Try an External Monitor

Connect your laptop to an external monitor (TV or another screen).

See if you can access BIOS or the boot menu on the external monitor.

Run HP Diagnostics

Press ESC after powering on.

Press F2 to run HP’s built-in hardware diagnostic.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hard Reset

I performed the hard reset several times. I used the following instructions: https://support.hp.com/lt-en/document/ish_6885024-6885081-16

The battery is not normally removable. The laptop was opened and the battery removed.

Try BIOS Recovery Again

I updated the BIOS again. I tried versions F.54 and F.56. After installing F.56, nothing worked, nothing started. After installing F.54, however, the PC started without a USB device connected. Windows displays F.55 as installed BIOS version.

Check BIOS Settings (if you can access BIOS)

I have no access to the BIOS. I get a black screen.

F2 or esc or F9 all end in a black screen

I tried installing the latest version of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. I started the setup in Windows and restarted. After the restart, I got a black screen. Only a BIOS recovery with F.54 made the PC bootable again.

Boot with No USB Devices

This still works but no access to the BIOS

Try an External Monitor

I used the TV via HDMI, but did not get any display

Run HP Diagnostics

I tried but got a black screen

Unfortunately, the suggested solutions didn't help me. I had already tried them all before my post, but without success.

In my opinion it feels like changes to the bios are not allowed neither access nor updates

I hope we could find a soulution

Regards Marcus
