Envy 17 Laptop (17-j178ca)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Has anyone else experienced the same issue with the Insyde F.72 BIOS that was released back in June 2018?

I recently upgraded the BIOS in my HP Envy 17 (17-j178ca) laptop from the Insyde F.71 BIOS to Insyde F.72. After the upgrade I found that my BD-ROM drive is no longer recognized by the BIOS nor is it recognized or working properly within the Windows 10 Pro operating system.  I have even replaced it with the original DVD-ROM drive with the same results.

I tried to downgrade the BIOS to the Insyde F.69 and the Insyde F.70 versions but am unable to downgrade. When using a 1 Gig USB memroy stick and the Windows Key + B method to load the BIOS, the computer stays with a blank screen and the caps lock key blinks. The USB memory stick is configured for FAT32 and has been used to update the BIOS in other laptops using the Windows Key + B method without any difficulty. I have tried the various recommendations to remove the battery and hold down the power button to remove any residual charge in the computer but that has not had any effect.

The Windows Key + B method does work when no USB memory stick is installed in a USB port but all it does is re-flash the the same Insyde F.32 BIOS from its internal recovery area.

I have tried interrupting the boot sequence to force an EFI file load from the USB memory stick but an error message indicates that the EFI file does not authenticate. Note: The interrupted boot sequence does recognize the USB memory stick while the Windows Key + B sequence does not. I change the BIOS configuration to disable the Secure Boot feature and Boot order but it no effect. Upon reboot and interruption of the boot sequence to use the EFI file on the USB memory stick I get a different error message saying the selected boot device failed.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to revert the BIOS or have had a similar issue?

Cheers,
