Pavilion dv5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This laptop fails to boot. I see the cas lock and scroll lock indicators flashing twice. I tried to recover the bios using the keyboard keys (Windows an B keys). Just get two beeps from that. Downloaded the current bios and ren the executable on my desktop PC (not an HP). I keep getting this error. I'm trying to use this utility to put the bios on a flash drive. Supposedly by doing this I can reload the BIOS on the HP laptop. ANy idea how to get this to work?

I downloaded the BIOS recover file sp46501.exe from the HP support site. I ran it as administrator and even tried running it in after booting my PC in safe mode but the result is always the same. In the log created by this executabler:

The log shows the OS is Vista - that's incorrect. I'm running Windows 10. Does that make a difference?

@nooneuknow

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion dv5 series laptop. I read that the laptop does not boot to Windows and the caps lock and scroll lock flash twice. You tried to perform a BIOS recovery and that did not either. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

Please let me know the exact laptop model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

You need to download the BIOS file depending on the operating system installed on the laptop. For example, the BIOS which is meant for Win7 should not be installed on Win10 and vice versa.

I suppose your laptop came with an older version of Windows and you might have updated it wot Win10 later.

I recommend you to contact our HP phone support team to check the available service options for your laptop as the motherboard may require a tattoo/Bios Flash.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the reply.

My laptop is a Pavilion dv5 - obviously out of warranty. When I downloaded the BIOS there was no option for Windows 10. I believe that I downloaded this BIOS installer twice - once selecting Vista 64 and the second time WIndows 7 64. The two downloaded files are identical. If there should be something different for WIndows 10, where do I find it?

Thanks for your response.

I've tried doing the steps suggested on that page. I've downloaded the bios executable. When I run it I get the screen to accept the license agreement. When I click next the files are extracted but then I immediately get the error message described in my previous post so I never get to the point of trying to put the BIOS on a USB flash drive.

BTW - the indication I have is that the caps lock and scroll lock indicators flash twice. And when I try the Windows key + B key and Power On button I get two beeps but nothing else happens. This of course is without a USB flash drive installed since I haven't been able to get the BIOS installed on the flash for the reason I've given above.

Once I enter the product ID (the serial number) it recognizes it as a Pavilion dv5-1125nr. Then it also recognizes that it is out of warranty. So I never see a "Still need help" link. The only link offered is to the HP support forums which is of course where I am right now.

I've searched the web for this error and have found lots of places where it's reported but nowhere have I seen a solution to this problem. I have to believe that there's a solution to this and that someone at HP knows what it is. At this point my laptop is unusable. It's frustrating to think that it could still be used if only I could try to reinstall the BIOS.
