Probook 640 G1
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

Ever since I've had this Probook 640 G1 laptop my keyboard has been disabled in the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Never really bothered me too much because there was a countdown to "Start Windows Normally". Now I purposely came to this screen because I need to start in "Safe Mode".

I have not had any problems with the keyboard anywhere else- but it's always been completely disabled in this screen.

Can anyone help me to enable the keyboard in this screen?

thanks,

Jim

Sorry, but that's not possible.

OEMs lock out the advanced BIOS options to prevent customers from making changes to options that can destabilize or otherwise damgage the PC -- and then send it back for repair under warranty claiming they did nothing to it.

I know only SOME of the advanced options are risky, but it's simpler to disable access to ALL advanced options than to allow/disallow on an individual option basis.

That's the course of action that HP has chosen.

So you are saying that I'm not allowed to boot in any of the "safe mode" options?

It actually sounds like we are talking about 2 different things here, because it's unheard of that my arrow keys, enter key and "esc" key would be disabled on the boot options menu page (on purpose)!

We are talking about two different things -- because SAFE mode is a Windows option, not a BIOS option.

And, advanced boot options are disabled by default in OEM BIOS settings.

So, if it is SAFE mode you want to enter, you do that by pressing F8 repeatedly after the PC reboots.

Hi,

Yes it's a "Windows" boot options screen: At the top of the page it says "Advanced Boot Options"; I guess that is where the confusion lies.

** Accessing this screen is not the problem **

Anyway, per my original message (see my first message post please!!):

My problem is that when I enter this (Windows Boot options) screen, my keyboard is disabled so I can't select anything (safe mode, etc). I can't even leave the screen without hitting the power button and restarting....

Like I mentioned in that initial message post: my keyboard has never worked in this screen- so anytime I've encountered this screen in the past (like, because of an abnormal shutdown)  I have never been able to select any option (like "Safe mode"). The "Start Windows Normally" option was always the default and was automatically selected after a 20-second countdown.

thanks

this is not resolved...

The "Expert" didn't read the question well enough to understand the problem.

The issue is simple: my keyboard is disabled when I'm in the Windows Boot Options screen...
This laptop has had this issue since I bought it.

Are you telling me no one else has had this issue and there's no easy solution to this?

thanks.
