Hi @MCJS

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the full error message and for already attempting a reset—that’s a valuable step.

The SMART Hard Disk Error (30A) means your hard drive is reporting signs of imminent failure. Please back up your data immediately and run a hardware diagnostic to confirm the drive’s condition.

Let’s now walk through a focused set of actions to help you verify the issue and protect your data.

Back Up Your Data Immediately

  • If the system still boots into Windows:
    • Connect an external USB drive.
    • Copy your important files (Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads) manually.
    • Avoid using backup software that may stress the drive—keep it light and fast.
  • If Windows doesn’t boot:
    • Use another PC to create a Windows 11 installation USB via the Create installation media for Windows - Microsoft Support
    • Boot your HP laptop from the USB and select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Command Prompt.
    • Use notepad from the command prompt to open File Explorer and copy files to an external drive.

Run the HP Hard Drive Diagnostic

  • Turn off the computer.
  • Power it on and immediately press F2 repeatedly to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests > Hard Drive > Quick Test.
You can follow this detailed guide:
    HP PCs – SMART hard disk error 301, 302, 309, 30A, 30B, 30C, 3F1, 3F2
  • If the Quick Test passes, run the Extensive Test for a deeper check.
  • If any test fails, note the 24-digit Failure ID shown on screen.

Check BIOS for Drive Detection

  • Restart the PC and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate to Storage or System Information.
  • Confirm if the hard drive is listed. If not, reseating the drive may help.

If the Drive Is Detected and Tests Pass

  • Boot into Windows and open the HP App.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Check for Updates.
  • Install any available firmware or BIOS updates.

Note:

  • SMART errors are triggered by the drive’s internal monitoring system and typically indicate physical wear or data integrity issues.
  • Even if the system continues to boot, the drive may fail at any time—data backup is the top priority.
  • If the drive fails the diagnostic, it will need to be replaced. You can reinstall Windows using the USB recovery media or the HP Cloud Recovery Tool.

Let me know if you’d like help creating a recovery USB or navigating the diagnostics. We’ll take it step by step to ensure your data is safe and your system is ready for recovery.
