I just got a new laptop.  When updating it shut off and will no longer restart.  Hp support recognizes the serial number but it also asks for the product number but it says that the product number is invalid.  I have tried every number I can find.

Hi @JFitz350X,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your new HP laptop. If the product number is not being recognized, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Check the Product Number:

  • The product number is typically located on a label on the bottom of the laptop. It might be labeled as "P/N" or "Product Number."
  • Ensure that you're entering the correct characters, including any hyphens or special characters.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all external devices (such as USB drives or printers) and power off the laptop.
  • Remove the laptop battery if it's removable. If not, skip this step.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reinsert the battery (if applicable) and power the laptop back on.

Use HP Diagnostics:

  • Some HP laptops have built-in diagnostics. You can usually access this by pressing a specific key during the startup process (often F2 or ESC).
  • Run a diagnostic test to check for hardware issues.

Update BIOS/UEFI:

  • Check if there is a BIOS/UEFI update available for your laptop model on the HP website.
  • Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the BIOS. This can sometimes resolve startup issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
