Hello Everyone,

Laptops model: Click

On August 6, a new BIOS update became available for my laptop. Several days ago, Windows forced me to install it along with other updates. I cannot precisely determine if the issue is a direct result of the BIOS update, but the problem appeared immediately afterward. BTW system is about 1.5 years.

Memory Module Details Patriot Signature 16GB DDR5 4800MHz SODIMM (Single Stick)

Note: Upgraded from the original 8 GB at the time of purchase.

Symptoms and Diagnostics

  1. Windows Instability: Post-update, Windows exhibits severe RAM-related issues (both runtime and boot time), including black death screens.

  2. Application Crashing: Applications like Settings, Calculator, and Chrome crash frequently and without a clear pattern.

  3. OS-Agnostic Failure: The issues persist even when booting to a USB Live Debian environment (e.g., Firefox crashes, apt crashes during installations).

  4. Hardware Diagnostic Error: I ran the HP BIOS integrated diagnostics and received an error on the Memory Fast Test.

    • Error Address: 0x02D13750

    • Error Code: 0x201

Troubleshooting and Context

  • The problem spontaneously appeared after the forced BIOS update, strongly suggesting a firmware-related issue rather than a random hardware failure.

  • I currently do not have access to another system to test the RAM module.

  • In Support page its said that BIOS not downgradable (I guess should dissaemble and flash it directly, if there is any source of bin).

Any help or official guidance on how to proceed, especially regarding a possible firmware fix or memory compatibility patch, would be greatly appreciated.

@Revio, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Based on your unit's specifications, the DDR5 RAM with 4800MHz is not compatible. Here’s the compatible configuration for your unit:

Two memory slots supporting up to 16 GB of RAM
DDR4-3200
Supports the following configurations:
● 16 GB (8 GB × 2)
● 12 GB (8 GB + 4 GB)
● 8 GB (8 GB × 1 or 4 GB × 2)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

@Garp_senchau

Thank you very much for your time and helpful response. I appreciate you looking into this issue for me.

I wanted to clarify a few details regarding my specific case:

  • The original RAM stick that came with my laptop is an 8GB, 4800MHz DDR5 module, matching the specification page.
  • The laptop worked flawlessly with the current non-original RAM stick installed for a significant period before the recent BIOS update.

Given this history, I strongly suspect that the issue is not related to a fundamental RAM compatibility problem, but rather a bug or unknown issue introduced in the new BIOS version that specifically affects the non-original RAM.

My only guess is that the new BIOS version has a stricter or flawed handling mechanism for non-OEM memory.

Therefore, I believe the most effective solution for me would be to:

Downgrade the BIOS to the previous version that worked correctly.

Prevent future automatic BIOS updates from reinstalling the problematic version.

Could you please provide guidance or instructions on the safest and recommended method to downgrade the BIOS for my specific laptop model, and how to disable or pause BIOS updates moving forward?

Thank you again for your continued support.

I recently tested a similar setup after a firmware update caused unstable RAM behavior on my own laptop. A simple takeaway is to reseat the module and run a clean memory scan with something like memory reduct to spot failing addresses early.
