I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT WOULD BE. IF I POWER ON THEN OFF SEVERAL TIMES, IT EVENTUALLY BOOTS UP. SOMETIMES I HOLD THE SHIFT KEY WHILE POWERING UP BUT THAT DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. IT IS VERY RANDOM HOW AND WHEN IT DECIDES TO POWER ON. THREE WRONG PASSWORDS BRINGS A SYSTEM DISABLED LOCK UP AND CODE: I [edited].....HELP PLEASE!

Hi @KROB012,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering a password prompt for either the system BIOS or an administrative password that is configured in your HP laptop's firmware. Here are a few steps and recommendations to address this issue.

Verify Password Request:

  • Confirm whether the password prompt is for the BIOS or Windows. A BIOS password prompt typically appears before Windows loads.

Reset BIOS Password:

  • If it's a BIOS password, you'll need to reset it. This often requires accessing the physical components of the laptop, such as removing the CMOS battery, or using a jumper switch on some models. Please refer to your HP laptop's manual for specific instructions or seek professional assistance.

Administrative Account:

  • If it's a Windows administrative password issue and you've forgotten your password, you may need to reset or recover your Windows password. You can do this using a password reset disk or by using recovery options provided by Microsoft.

BIOS Update or Reset:

  • Reset the BIOS/UEFI to default settings to see if this resolves the password prompt. This can typically be done within the BIOS/UEFI menu (usually accessed by pressing a key like F2, F10, ESC, or DEL during startup).

Check for Stuck Keys:

  • Ensure that none of the keyboard keys, especially the Shift key, is stuck as this can sometimes cause unusual behavior during boot.

These steps should help you troubleshoot the issue with your HP laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
