HP Spectre x360 - 15-df1075nr

My Spectre X360 is locking up randomly.  Total system freeze requiring a hard restart

The events log shows Microsoft login assistant is causing the system lockup.

I’ve disabled the service and set it to only run when requested and changed from stop after repeated failures to keep trying

These almost solved the issue, but recurred again.

removing the service causes Skype to fail

any suggestions on next steps?

Hi @Bruce_H

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Random lockups on your HP Spectre x360, particularly related to the Microsoft Login Assistant, can be frustrating. Here are several steps you can take to further troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Update Drivers

  • Graphics and Audio Drivers: Ensure that your graphics and audio drivers are up to date. Visit the HP support site or the manufacturer's website for your graphics card to download the latest drivers.
  • Windows Updates: Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.

2. Check for Background Applications

  • Certain applications, especially those that rely on the Microsoft Login Assistant (like Skype), may conflict. Close unnecessary applications and see if the issue persists.

3. Perform a Clean Boot

  • A clean boot can help identify if third-party applications are causing the problem:
    1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
    2. In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
    3. Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items.
    4. Restart your computer and see if the issue occurs.

4. Run System File Checker (SFC)

  • Corrupted system files can lead to instability. Run the SFC scan:
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait for the process to complete and follow any instructions provided.

5. Check Event Viewer

  • Since you've already noted issues in the Event Log, you can continue to monitor it for any recurring errors or warnings that might provide more context.

6. Disable Microsoft Login Assistant Temporarily

  • If disabling the Microsoft Login Assistant has alleviated some issues but not completely, consider keeping it disabled temporarily to see if the lockups persist. This may not be a permanent solution, but it can help diagnose the problem further.

7. Check for Malware

  • Run a full system scan with Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus to ensure there’s no malware causing the lockups.

8. System Restore

  • If the issue started recently, consider performing a system restore to a point before the lockups began:
    1. Go to Settings > System > About > System Protection.
    2. Click on System Restore and follow the prompts.

9. Reinstall Skype

  • If Skype is necessary and conflicts with the Microsoft Login Assistant, try uninstalling and then reinstalling Skype to see if that resolves any issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
