I'm having the same problem. Since day one with this laptop. It just cannot accept security updates. It has had to roll it back every time because it hangs up on the boot screen. I spent two days straight with HP Support doing BIOS updates and even a factory reset. Nothing solves the problem. Would be great if this could be fixed. Currently feels like my brand-new laptop is completely unreliable.

Hi @kuromi5000

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Since the issue has been present from the beginning and you've already completed BIOS updates, extensive HP Support troubleshooting, and a factory reset, it points to the update process itself not completing successfully on the system.

For your HP OmniBook X Flip, please try the following checks:

Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, docks, printers, external displays, etc.) before installing Windows security updates.

Update the system using HP Support Assistant and ensure all available HP firmware, chipset, and driver updates are installed before attempting the Windows update again.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Power off the notebook.
  • Turn it on and repeatedly press F2.
  • Run the System Tests, especially Memory and Storage tests.
  • If any failure ID appears, note it.

Ensure the SSD has sufficient free storage space available before starting the update.

Perform a clean startup of Windows:

  • Disable non-essential startup applications.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Retry the Windows security update.

If the update hangs on the HP logo or boot screen, force the device off by holding the power button for about 15 seconds, then restart and allow Windows to complete any automatic repair process.

Check whether the issue occurs with every security update or a specific KB update number. If a particular update repeatedly fails, please share the KB number and any error message displayed during installation or rollback.

Since the laptop consistently rolls back after security updates despite a factory reset, it would also be helpful to know:

  • The exact HP OmniBook X Flip model number
  • Windows version and OS Build
  • The security update (KB) number that fails
  • Whether HP Hardware Diagnostics reports any failures

This information will help identify whether the issue is related to firmware compatibility, storage, memory, or a specific Windows update package.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

OK yesterday I used the HP support software that came with the laptop (blue circle with ? in it) and ran another check for BIOS update. It found one, so I used the HP BIOS update tool to update the BIOS.  It completed, and then I did the Windows security update 2026-09, and it went through no problem.  I'm hoping this is the solve, and that the next security update will go through first time without having to roll back. Good luck.
