So, short and sweet. My laptop is an older (maybe around 8 years old) hp pavilion touchsmart sleekbook that pooped out on me probably 6 or 7 years ago. Life happened and I was only recently able to get a new hard drive but now need a reboot disk? So, first, can I aquire one free? Second, I had already upgraded from windows 8 to the initial free upgrade to windows 10. I prefer the windows 10 and am wondering if I could start with a windows 10 boot or must I start over with windows 8? Thank you for even considering answering a fools foolish question

Hi:
Yes, you can directly reinstall W10 for free without having to go through the older operating systems.
You will need to have access to another PC running Windows 7 64 bit or newer and an 8 GB USB flash drive.
Make a bootable USB installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below. Make the 64 bit installation media.
Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
After you boot from the installation media you will need to select the version of W10 you want to install.
Select W10 Home.
Then you will be asked to enter a product key.
Select the 'I don't have a product key' option and W10 will install and automatically activate after you are connected to the internet.
