I have been trying to restore my HP laptop for the last past hour and all it keep saying is Please wait while your Windows files and settings are being restored. Why is it taken so long I just wanted to restore the point from yesterday 9/3/2025?

@Ns751954,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

System Restore can sometimes take quite a long time to complete -even if you’re only rolling back to a restore point from yesterday. This is because Windows must:

  • Replace system files and registry entries,

  • Uninstall updates/drivers installed since that point, and

  • Reconfigure the system state before reboot.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Duration – Depending on your hardware (CPU speed, hard drive vs. SSD) and how many changes were made, System Restore may take 15 minutes to over an hour.

  2. Do not interrupt – If you see the hard drive activity light blinking occasionally, it’s still working. Interrupting can risk file corruption.

  3. If it really freezes – If it has been stuck on the same screen for 2+ hours with no disk activity at all, it may have hung. In that case, hold down the power button to force a shutdown. On restart, Windows will often roll back the restore attempt automatically.

If System Restore Fails to Complete:

If the system does not boot properly after restarting, you can try running System Restore again from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE):

  1. Power off your PC.

  2. Power it back on and, as soon as you see the HP logo, press the F11 key repeatedly. (This should bring up Recovery options.)

  3. Choose TroubleshootAdvanced optionsSystem Restore.

  4. Select your account, enter your password, and then choose the restore point you want to use.

Alternatively, you can also boot into Safe Mode and launch System Restore there:

  1. From the Recovery Environment, go to TroubleshootAdvanced optionsStartup SettingsRestart.

  2. After restart, press 4 (or F4) to boot into Safe Mode.

  3. Once in Safe Mode, type rstrui.exe into the Start menu and press Enter to launch System Restore.

Bottom line:

An hour or more is not unusual for System Restore. However, if a system restore takes longer than three to four hours or appears frozen, it may be stuck and indicate a problem with your system, a failing hard drive, or corrupted files, requiring a forced shutdown and a potential restart or further troubleshooting in Safe Mode. If it truly freezes, you can retry the process safely from WinRE or Safe Mode. If restore points continue to fail, consider running Startup Repair or using Reset this PC (keep files) as a more reliable recovery method.

Kind Regards,
