Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

There was a recent (and major) Windows 10 update which I think is now causing a hardware compatibility issue with my Pavillion laptop. When the Hard Drive activity sits at 100% for any longer than a couple of minutes (happens when converting Video), the entire system locks up.

No mouse/keyboard operation. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not allow recovery, and I have to hold in Power to do a hard reset.

I have a Windows Event Log stored that shows this crash and the initial message is; "A Corrected Hardware Error Occurred" Event ID 17 by WHEA-Logger.

After that I have numerous errors but regularly a Timeout (>3000ms) of SystemUsageReportSvc_WILLAMETTE.

This is starting to make my laptop unusable as I often carry out activities that shoot the HDD usage up to 100%. The problem has never occurred before and I can only link it to the recent W10 upgrade.

Is there a known compatibility issue being reported?

Hi Everyone,

Just as an update. No matter what I tried, this issue persisted. I had updated EVERY driver I could find, including BIOS. Going through Device Manager I made sure everything was at the latest revision.

I was convinced it was an issue with the last Windows 10 Creator Update which I had installed, but not created a Restore Point - my mistake. So my only option;  use Windows 10 Reset to get back to a factory level, and start all over again.

I used the "Keep Files" option and nicely enough, Windows listed the 30+ software packages it had un-installed for me.

I spent a couple of days setting everything back up again and proceeded to my Gig on Saturday night where I delighted to announce, the system worked without fail (hope I am not jinxing it).  Since installing the Creator Update the system crashed at least twice at every gig, and even at home through normal use.

Everything now seems to be OK.

So the solution unfortunately if anyone has similar problems on a Pavilion with Windows 10 Creator Update installed (randing freeze/lockup), is to reset your Windows 10 back to factory and set it up again.

And when I am offered the update again - I will be declining! Seems completely unstable.

Thought I would let everying know.

Hi! @Gimmick, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand Hard Drive activity is running at 100% on your PC.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes to your PC?

Have you run a system diagnostics test on your PC?

Please try the steps recommended below.

Open up a run dialog by holding down the Windows Key and pressing R. In the "Open" field, enter "services.msc". Look for "Windows Search" and "Superfetch."

Go to each of these entries. Right click on one and select "Properties." In the drop-down box labeled "Startup type," choose Disabled. After leaving the properties window, press "Stop" in the upper left corner. Do this for both.

If the issue still persists try the steps mentioned below.

1) Type cmd.exe in the search box. From the list of choice, right click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
Click Yes at the UAC window prompt.
2) In the Command Prompt window, type in the following command:
If you would like to stop Windows search permanently, please do the following:

a) Press Windows key + R at the same time, and type in services.msc.
b) Locate Windows Search option, double click it to enter its Properties window.
c) Change the Startup type to Disabled. Then click OK to save the change.
Check to see if the disk usage and the performance of your computer improve or not, if not, please move on.

Also, run the system diagnostics on your PC and let me know the results.

Refer this article to know how to run system diagnostics test on your PC.

Let me know if this works!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂

Hi MrRobot,

To update this issue;

No hardware changes have been made. The only change to software is that of the latest Windows 10 major update.  I have disabled the Windows Search and Superfetch under Services and it has made no difference. Another crash today but this time not while the system was particularly strained.

As before; everything froze and I had to do a Power Button shutdown and restart.

I have saved the Application and System Event Logs and they are both accessible via my Dropbox;

Application Log: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m6plrwn3osmbh7u/Applications%20-%20Crash%20-%20170517.evtx?dl=0

System Log: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z8pvbpo8db0s0du/System%20-%20Crash%20-%20170517.evtx?dl=0

The machine crashed on, or around 23:32 on 17/05/2017. There are several instances of Errors, Criticals and Warnings. None of which I understand.

If there is any way you can help get to the bottom of the problem, I would be extremely grateful. I use this laptop for DJ gigs and up until the last Windows 10 update, it has been 100% reliable.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Hi! @Gimmick, Thanks for your response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

Thanks for sharing the system log details.

Please try the steps recommended below.

1) Right click the Windows 10 Start Menu icon
2) Select System
3) Select Advanced System Settings
4) In the Startup and Recovery section, select Settings
6) In the System Failure section, remove the checkmark from the option box in front of "automatically restart"
7) Click OK to save and exit.

If you've never changed Virtual Memory settings, here's how:
1) Right-click the Windows 10 Start Menu icon
2) Select System
3) Select Advanced System Settings
4) In the Performance section, select Settings
5) Select the Advanced tab
6) In the Virtual Memory section, select Change
7) Create a custom range -- lower range 8192 -- higher range 16284

Let me know if this helps!

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

Hi Again,

OK advice taken;

  • Auto Restart after Crash - Disabled
  • Virtual Memory - Set to Manual, 8194 - 16,284 as levels

I am going to leave the laptop running my DJ software and CCTV stuff overnight, as a test. It froze twice on Saturday night at a gig which was embarrasing.

I also found this article;

https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/solved-windows-10-freezes-locks-up-randomly-easily/

I have followed most of the advice here;

  • Drivers Checked and Updated
  • Memory Diagnostics Complete - No Issues
  • Reset Virtual Memory (as you already advised)
  • Disk Check Complete - No Issues
  • System File Check (SFC) - No Issues

The only thing I can't find are the "C-States" and "C1E" options in BIOS that they explain might also help.

Can anyone confirm if this model of laptop should have these options?

Will update if the issue occurs again or if I have several days of stable operation.

Thanks again.

Kevin

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately I am disappointed to report that the laptop crashed again today. It did however last a lot longer and a clue may be to usage of the system.

When it crashed at the weekend during a gig (twice) it was obviously being used regularly. I was loading songs and controlling the DJ software through a USB Mixer, as well as Alt-Tab'ing between that and the CCTV software to look at activity.  While using the system, the crash happened after only a couple of hours.

However once I had made all of the recommended changes I loaded the DJ software with a massive list of songs, and hit "AutoPlay". The CCTV software was also loaded and left running.

The laptop was then left alone at around 10pm (approx), through the night and all day.

It ran without issue up until 3:18pm today at which point it crashed again.  The odd thing is that it co-incided (I think) with my attempt to remotely access the machine using TeamViewer.  The connection wasn't successful but when I got home the system had crashed.

So it would appear that the system is stable - unless I use it! (Great!)

Links below are for the most recent Application and System Logs and I have one initial question;

Why are there "TMP-WMI" events every minute when the system isn't in use - is this a Red Herring?

The actual event is; "The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) hardware on this computer cannot be provisioned for use automatically. To set up the TPM interactively use the TPM management console (Start->tpm.msc) and use the action to make the TPM ready."

I am desperate to get to the bottom of this and if not, may have to consider it to be a hardware fault.  I have paid for HP extended warranty, so need some additional advice or for someone to point me in the direction of what to do about a warranty claim.

Please help! I have three gigs this weekend and absolutely NO confidence in my laptop anymore, since the last Windows 10 update.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE:  Reviewing the changes that I have made, I note that I had checked and updated device drivers EXCEPT that of the core BIOS.

F.83.Rev.A

This is dated 7th April 2017 which (I think) is after the release of Windows 10 Creator's Update.

So my theory is that this could be linked (no firm evidence), and have updated BIOS.

I will repeat my overnight testing and let everyone know how I get on.

@Mr Robot - UPDATE

Just to let everyone know that an update to the BIOS appears to have resolved my random crashing issue. I have managed to run the laptop heavily loaded (CPU > 80%) continually for over 24hrs with no problems.

I have been randomly keeping the system in operation by remoting in (TeamViewer) and loading up Software and Files.  This is all at the same time as my DJ software continually playing songs and CCTV software in Monitor mode.

So, fingers crossed that the BIOS update was the solution.

Thank you so much for your help with this as all of the tests carried out at least proved what it wasn't, and definitely pointed me in the right direction.

I have re-enabled SuperFetch and Windows Search since they had no impact on the solution.  All is well with my little workhorse of a machine - Happy Days!

Regards,

Kevin

OK I Give In !!

The problem is back - still not resolved. Seems to give me a false sense of security. Can run the system for days OK with no issues but then when I start to use it properly, it crashes. I'm at a gig right now and it has crashed 3 times in 2 hours.

Completely useless machine now!

I also have 3 seperate people all with HP Pavilion laptops that are all confirming regular crashing, having updated to WINDOWS CREATOR PATCH.

What is going on?  I cannot work with this machine and I have extended warranty on it!

I will be using a temporary machine for gigs until I get resolution which may involve sending this off for test/repair.

Can I get some help and feedback please?  I surely can't be the only one having issues since the last WIndows update???

Is there a compatibility issue here?

System Log from Crash: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1kjqm4501lni4bh/System%20Crash%20260517.evtx?dl=0

Application Log from Crash: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r8nowgdp2eejvy7/Application%20Crash%20260517.evtx?dl=0

Time of Crash:  22:41 today (26/05/2017)

Can anyone see anything in these two logs that is a clue??

The system just freezes! No BSoD or Crash Error - everything just stops and i have to button reset it.

Please help!
