I bought an HP 850 G6 laptop with a failed drive but the bios is locked via a password.
After attempting 3 times it says system locked but unlike the others I do not get a code, just a message to turn the laptop off then on again.
I cannot boot the laptop via USB because legacy boot is disabled.
How can I reset the bios password back to default?

Basically, you can't -- as this is not something you can do on your own.
I'm really sorry that we can not help you with this, but Community policy prohibits us from assisting you in any way with bypassing or resetting passwords.
For BIOS or power-on password resets, read this HP thread: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06368824.
If you are not prepared to spend the money to get HP to replace the motherboard for BIOS password resets, you could take the PC to a local repair facility to see if they can do it for you -- but we are unable to assist in that.
