Hi ChrisK333
Depending on whether your laptop is running normally or completely frozen, here are the best ways to restart your HP Envy.
1. The Standard Way (Software Restart)
If your mouse and screen are working, use the Windows menu:
Click the Start icon (Windows logo).
Select the Power icon.
Choose Restart.
2. The Keyboard Shortcuts (When the Mouse is Lagging)
If your mouse is acting up, these shortcuts are your best bet:
The "Power User" Menu: Press Windows Key + X, then press U, then press R.
The "Emergency" Screen: Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. Use the Tab key to highlight the Power icon in the bottom-right corner, press Enter, and select Restart.
The Desktop Shortcut: If you are on the home screen, press Alt + F4 to bring up the shut-down menu, use the arrow keys to select "Restart," and hit Enter.
3. The "Frozen" Restart (Force Shutdown)
If the screen is totally unresponsive and the shortcuts above don't work, you'll need to use the physical power button:
Press and hold the Power button for a full 10 to 15 seconds. The screen will go black, and any lights (like the power LED) will turn off.
Wait about 5 seconds.
Press the Power button normally to turn it back on.
4. The "Hard Reset" (For Glitchy Hardware)
If your laptop is acting "weird" (WiFi not connecting, battery not charging, etc.), a hard reset clears the motherboard's temporary memory:
Unplug the charger and any USB devices.
Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds. (It will turn off after 10, but keep holding for the full 30).
Plug the charger back in and turn it on as usual.
Pro Tip: If your screen is black but you can still hear the fans running, try pressing Windows Key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This restarts your graphics driver without rebooting the whole computer and often fixes "frozen" screens.
or
Performing a factory reset on an HP Envy laptop depends on whether you can currently log into Windows or if you are locked out.
Before You Start:
Plug in your charger: A reset can take 30 minutes to 2 hours. If the battery dies mid-process, it can corrupt your system.
Backup your data: If you choose "Remove Everything," all your photos, documents, and files will be gone forever.
Method 1: If You Can Log In (Windows Settings)
This is the safest and easiest way if your laptop is still functional.
For Windows 11:
Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
Next to Reset this PC, click the Reset PC button.
Choose either Keep my files (removes apps/settings only) or Remove everything (complete wipe).
Follow the prompts to begin.
For Windows 10:
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
Under Reset this PC, click Get Started.
Choose your preferred reset type and follow the on-screen instructions.
Method 2: If You Are Locked Out (F11 Startup Method)
Use this if you forgot your password or Windows won't load properly.
Turn off the laptop completely.
Press the Power button and immediately begin tapping the F11 key repeatedly (about once per second).
A "Choose an option" screen will appear. Select Troubleshoot.
Select Reset this PC.
Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
If prompted, select Local Reinstall (fastest) and then click Reset.
I hope the above is helpful
