My Revolve G3 boots up without using the power switch, keyboard lights up/initializes, I hear a click through the speakers and shuts down. Nothing on screen, won't see bootable USB drive. Any ideas would be appreciated, really don't want to scrap such a good I7 board. Thx for the help.

Hello.

You wrote a couple weeks ago that you replaced the thermal paste on Revolve G3.

CPU without heatsink contact will heat up in three seconds to a temperature where the CPU thermal protection kicks in and the computer is shut down forcibly.

If you removed the whole system board, try doing it again and running the bare minimum of devices to see if you can get it to work. This includes only the system board, memory module and of course cooling solution. Connect to an external display if possible.

Hello Jupitero, thx for the reply, I will give it a go.

Well, took it down to bare bones, mb, some RAM and ketboard/external monitor. Still can't use the power switch, not sure if I mentioned that. Plug in the power adapter, keyboard and power switch light up, 3 seconds later everything shuts down. Kind of at a loss now. Any ideas where I could find another mb?

Hi,

There are multiple motherboards - or system boards as HP calls them - for Revolve 810 G3.

Take a look at the Maintenance and Service Guide for your laptop first. Pages 50-51 list all the boards and their spare part numbers.

https://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04582529.pdf

Your board should have a white sticker telling the spare part number, which is one of those boards. You can go for any of those boards listed in the guide, their main difference is with the embedded 5th gen Intel CPU and the Windows licensing.

For example, if you are runninng Windows 10 Pro in your laptop and the license was provided by your old board, downgrading to a model without Windows license will cause your Windows installation to deactivate and requires activation with a separate Windows 10 license code you would need to obtain. The list has Windows Professional and Standard licenses. "Standard" means Windows Home version. If you are running Windows Home at the moment, the Professional license includes Home license and you can update your Windows Home to Pro.

Where to get new board?

1. HP has their own spare part shop, https://parts.hp.com  but as this is a 10-year-old model, they probably do not carry spare parts anymore.

2. I would look out for people selling their old Revolve 810 G3 laptops in eBay ond whatever second hand websites you may have around. These days people are getting rid of computers that cannot run Windows 11 officially. Sometimes people also sell laptops for spare parts due to damaged display.

3. Search the internet for those spare parts listed in the Maintenance guide. I would expect at least some of them to be still available.

4. If you have a local HP service shop, ask if they can source system boards.

Thx Jupitero, great infomation. I did do a quick scan on Ebay and found one G3 I7 board, they wanted $200.  Also found a complete G3 I7 for $210, a bit more than I was hoping to spend. Anyway, thanks again for your help.
