Hi @TeeJae58

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry your laptop is stuck at the SMART Hard Disk Error screen. This message means the hard drive has detected a serious fault and may be close to failing.

Let’s walk through the safest way to confirm the issue and recover your data if possible.

Step 1: Run the System Diagnostics Test

This confirms the health of the hard drive.

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Power it on and immediately press ESC repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open System Diagnostics.
  4. Choose Component Tests > Hard Drive > Quick Test, then run the Extended Test.
  • If the test fails or shows errors, the drive is likely failing and should not be used for further writes.

Step 2: Attempt Data Backup (If Drive Is Still Accessible)

If the diagnostics show the drive is still readable:

  1. Create a Windows installation USB using another PC:
  2. Insert the USB into your laptop and boot from it:
    • Power on and press ESC > F9 > select USB drive.
  3. When the installer loads, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.
  4. Use the following command to open File Explorer:explorer.exe
  5. Try copying your files to an external USB drive.

If File Explorer doesn’t open or the drive isn’t accessible, data recovery will require specialized tools or services.

Step 3: Replace or Reinstall Windows (If Data Is Not Needed)

If you’re ready to start fresh:

  1. Boot from the Windows USB installer again.
  2. Choose Install Now > Custom Install.
  3. Select the faulty drive and format it.
  4. Proceed with installation.

If the installer cannot detect the drive or fails to install, the hard disk must be replaced.

Let me know what the diagnostics report shows or if you’re able to access the drive through the USB boot method. I’ll guide you further based on what happens next.

You deserve a smooth, reliable system—and I’m here to help you get there.
