ELITEBOOK 840 G3 with SAMSUNG NVMe
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Not a question, but more like an answer to help people who are tyring to install Win 7 - 64 Bit onto an ELITEBOOK 840 G3.

Some models of the G3 have SAMSUNG "SATA" SSD's, while other's have SAMSUNG "NVMe" SSD's. There's a BIG difference in the way in which those ( 2 ) operate. The SATA ssd is spoken to using the INTEL SATA storage driver's using a SATA interface. The NVMe on the other hand, is spoken to using the INTEL PCI Express Bus, and NOT the SATA interface.

I've seen many people pulling their hair out over getting Win 7 installed on the unit's with NVMe's, so here's some help for those people......

First thing you need to do is download the follwoing files....

1. The LASTEST "INTEL RST Storage Driver" ....  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-

2. The CORRECT driver's for your particular SSD ( Intel, Samsung, Lite-On. Sandisk, etc. ). The ONLY place I've found them is here.....  https://www.win-raid.com/t29f25-Recommended-AHCI-RAID-and-NVMe-Drivers.html

All I can say is THANK GOD FOR FERNANDO !!!  Or we'd probably never get the OS re-installed.

BTW, make sure you DON't have UEFI ( aka "Secure Boot" ) enabled in the BIOS when you boot from your Win 7 USB, and "Windows Boot Manager" should ALWAYS be the 1st  ( top ) spot in the Boot Order in the BIOS. And make sure the the latest INTEL USB 3.0 driver's are in your Win 7 Bootable USB.

When you create your bootable USB drive ( I extract the files from the Win 7 Volume License ISO to a folder, and then use RMprepUSB - choosing WIN 7, NTFS File System, No 2nd Partition, and on Step 5 i COPY the files from the folder NOT extract them from the ISO ).....you simply extact the INTEL RST files to a folder, and then extract the NVMe files to another folder. Then copy and paste those ( 2 ) folder's onto the Win 7 bootable USB you just made with RMprepUSB.

When you boot from your Win 7 USB, it will not see the NVMe, so 1st go to your folder with the INTEL RST drivers, you want to install ALL of the ones that are labeled by windows as SETUP files. Then you still won't be able to see the NVMe drive, and now you want to go to your 2nd folder and install the SETUP file for the NVMe, as soon as that 2nd step is done, you should now be able to "see", and therefore Read & Write to that NVMe......  Hope that helps !!!  Please post back with any questions / problems. Good Luck !!!
