I think tonight I'm going to go ahead and revert back to 8.1. This is getting beyond ridiculous. I might even try to install from the ISO file, not that I have any great expectations.
I recommend doing a clean install from ISO at a time when your free time is 100% worthless and you have something (alcohol?) to numb the brain, be very sure of this.
I had this issue on the last TP build, then wiped for my 8.1 on the 29th to take the free upgrade, had issues with sleep, clean installed from ISO on the 30th and still issues.

I am not going to do a CLEAN install. First I am reverting. Then installing from the ISO (download and upgrade, not writing to disc or USB device). Before that I am going to look at the Intel Chipset Driver for my video and see what it is giving me BEFORE the upgrade. Then I will compare notes.
If it fails to revert OR if something else goes wrong I restore my system to factory specs. I store EVERYTHING (and that mean EVERY SINGLE THING of a personal nature) in the cloud since I have unlimited storage on MS OneDrive.
I just told HP to call me -- they did -- and hung up. Must be they are calling from a Win10 machine that freaked out. 🙂

You know...I already FEEL bad about what I am GOING to say to the poor HP rep that calls me. I should apologize up-front before I cream him.
Great...I just got an Indian guy...who just got verbally CREAMED by me because he "apologized" to me (I hate that, because an apology implies resolution). I told him that the ONE thing the customers want from HP is an official word from them about the issue. I absolutely hammered him about the SILENCE about this matter and told him about this forum and how there are over 60 pages of frustrated customers.
UPDATE: I strongly encouraged the HP rep to get out in front of this issue and get on this forum and tell the customers something official. I asked him if it seems reasonable to allow HP customers to remain completely befuddled about what they are doing. He agreed that something needs to be done (I don't think he was placating me). So, hopefully very soon we will see something official.
I can say this...he said this is a HUGE bug (duh!) and it is directly related to MS (at which time I chastised him for blaming them. Of course, it probably is them but that does not excuse their silence).

I'm finding it incredibly frustrating how there hasn't been a solution yet... I'm a student, and my family and I can't afford to buy a new laptop for myself. If all these hard shutdowns are actually harming my harddrive or BIOS, I don't know if I can afford the time or the money to fix it!
I can't believe how silent HP and Microsoft are being. If someone else would like to take one for the team and give HP a strongly worded message on this topic, could you mention this thread? It's like they're trying to ignore it.
Still waiting for the day where a fix is available. Would be great to be able to use my laptop without worry.

Hi I know it is not fix but I think is better than hard shutdown.
I can restart my laptop without any problem, so when I want to shutdown I do restart instead and when it starting again I quickly do hard shutdown.

I actually read this EXACT comment to the HP tech regarding their abysmal silence on this matter. The tech took a screenshot. I implored him to get someone OFFICIAL on this forum and let their customers KNOW that they "feel their pain and are doing something about it!" The tech told me he is sending this forum link to someone higher up and sent them a screen shot of the forum. My only point to him was this: The problem is obvious. Many HP users cannot sleep. The issue is tied to the Win10 upgrade thus it is a MS issue. What they want to hear from HP, of whom they gave their hard earned money to, is that they know and are riding MS's butt to get it resolved.
How hard is it...really...to communicate to the customers. I told him it would only take 2 minutes of someone's time to tell the over 60 pages of responses SOMETHING official. Sigh. Customer service 101 folks.

*sigh* here we go again lol.
The problem here is that, you think you can restart without any problems. But infact the laptop is actually doing a hard shut down on itself before it starts itself back up again. So in short, you could probably save yourself the hassle of restarting first and just carry on with the hard shut down. This can be backed up by checking the log files in Event Viewer.
The only plus I can see from this mess is that when you click shut down, the laptop begins the process of shutting down and seems to get quite far into it before the crash. So I HOPE that it's been able carry out a majority of what it needed to do before it crashes. That way any long term damage will be at a minimum. Again, I HOPE!

Well... I've had no luck doing a shutdown, but I have had luck doing a restart. Only after I restarted would I be able to shut down without the power button light stuck on. Seems, at least for me, something needs to be cleared out and the restart does that allowing the computer to be refreshed so that Shutdown works like it's supposed to. *shrugs*
