Have a Model # 17-f037CI Pavillion Notebook. Computer starts up and finally gets to the log in screen.

Once password is entered and it accepts the screen goes blank or black and cannot proceed.

Hi,

If you're running Windows 8 or 8.1, try using Windows System Restore to return the machine to a previous point in time when it worked correctly - a full guide on how to do this ( including a video overview ) can be found on the following link under the sub heading:  Restore your computer when Windows 8 cannot start normally ( this is about half way down the page ).

We are experiencing the same issue. We tried pressing F11, (our mute button, btw)  repeatedly during reboot and nothing happened. Our screen is back lit, we can see our mouse pointer and access the internet but we can't access any programs directly. It will let us access task manager and we can stop and start some processes but we cannot access our O/S, Windows 8. Any ideas?

My screen is doing the same thing. I did the new updates on it and I type my password in and the screen just turns black. I can see my mouse pointer. I tried resetting it by holding the power butting down for 15 seconds taking te battery pack out then plugging the charger up and it still does the same thing.

Ok, my husband just started ours in safe mode. He did the following: Hit ctrl, alt, del. Chose task manager. Click file. Run New task. Type in msconfig. That's your general boot process and allows you to click safe boot. Give that a try. Unfortunately, we are still not able to do a system restore. It can't be accessed. My husband is trying something right now, will let you know if it works.

What would be the start up setting I would need?

I'm doing a system restore. It's restoring all my files and everything.

Yay! I'm so glad it worked for you! It really sucks when a computer flakes out on you and you worry it's gone for good. It's awesome when you can find help! My husband eventually got ours to do a system restore too! So, when we were in safe mode, it let us access the side bar, (Windows 8 O/S) and we selected settings. Had to get out of safe mode, went to settings, control panel, option recovery, setting at bottom: change your pc settings. Advanced options, restart with troubleshoot and it let us choose system restore options from there. Or, click on side bar, look for change pc settings and a window should pop up with options. Choose a system restore date that is before your last update. We're going to clean up our drives and files to make sure we get rid of anything that compromised our system. Good luck to anyone reading this for help! 😃
