I was wondering if this has ever been resolved yet? I've had the same issue for almost 2 years now but figured it just meant, like everything else these days, my computer was falling apart and I needed a new one. My screen will turn back on if I leave the computer open and move and mouse around or touch a key but that is because I have it set up to never fully fall asleep. If I select from the menu to sleep, the screen will proceed to go black but the computer never actually goes to sleep. The only way to get it out of sleep mode is to hold the power button until it fully shuts off then restart my computer again. Anytime I fully close my computer, forget it, there's no chance of it turning back on by itself; I once again need to hold the power button to shut it down and restart the computer all over again. I have kept my computer up-to-date with all Windows and HP updates.

@dmedeiros517

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  •  What is the operating system?
  • What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Seems like HP does not know how to fix this problem. I got my HP a little over a year ago so warranty is over and spent close to $800 on the laptop. This week all of a sudden, the screen would go to sleep and won't turn back on. I have to turn it off manually.

@HP, this thread has been ongoing for quite sometime and would really appreciate a resolution as non of the trouble shooting guidelines are resolving the issue. HP....HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

@MarioKings,

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.

Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.

Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.

Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it founds, go ahead fixing it.

If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps.

On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.

Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.

From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.

Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.

From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.

Click on ‘Save changes’ button.

If the issue persists, follow the below steps.

Go to the ‘Start’ menu and type ‘Control panel’ then hit the ‘Enter’ key.

From the top-right filter, choose ‘Large icons’ and navigate to the ‘Power Options’,

Click and open the ‘Power options’.

Select the power plan according to your requirement and click on ‘Change plan settings’.

Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’.

In the power options windows, click on the button ‘Restore plan defaults’.

Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ button.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Cheers!

Option number 2 made it so that my sleep option works momentarily, but then the inside light switches on and the screen won't turn on. Just bought this PC, very concerned...

I have been having this problem with my HP Pavilion Laptop from new (screen not waking up from sleep whilst hard drive is running) and have tried every troubleshooting step recommended.

By chance today I found a fix that works perfectly for me:  press Windows Key, CTRL, SHIFT, B.

Apparently this key combination restarts the graphics driver, and my screen now turns back on from sleep.  I hope this helps.

I thought the Windows-CTRL-SHIFT-B combination had sorted out the problem with my screen not turning back on from sleep but I spoke to soon.

It worked perfectly when I tried it before posting, and continued to do so for the rest of that day, but no longer wakes my screen from sleep.

Please accept my apologies, and if anyone else has found a solution I would be enormously grateful for your input.

Thank you
