Can anyone tell me how to disable the security lockout that occurs if I have turned my laptop on and off frequently in a short timescale please. I often use my laptop for short periods and having to wait 2 hours to get back into it is unworkable. Thanks

Hi @Lorraine2211,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

That 2-hour lockout is typically caused by HP Sure Start / BIOS security or TPM protection kicking in after multiple rapid power cycles. It’s designed to prevent tampering, but for normal short-use sessions, it can feel unworkable.

Here’s what you can do:

1. Check BIOS Security Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc → F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate to Security → TPM / Sure Start / Intrusion Detection.
  • Look for options like:
    • Repeated Boot Protection
    • Tamper Lockout
  • If enabled, set them to Disabled or Notify Only.

2. Disable BitLocker Auto-Lock (if active)

  • In Windows, open Control Panel → BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  • Select Suspend Protection before frequent restarts.
  • This prevents TPM from triggering lockout during rapid boots.

3. Update BIOS & HP Security Software

  • Go to Official HP® Support.
  • Enter your laptop model and install the latest BIOS and HP Client Security Manager updates.
  • Newer BIOS versions often reduce aggressive lockout behavior.

4. HP Sure Start Policy

  • If your laptop uses HP Sure Start, open HP Client Security → BIOS Settings Protection.
  • Change policy from Enforce Lockout to Alert Only.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I don't seem to have sure start on my laptop and cannot see bitlocker drive encryption in the control panel. My laptop has all the latest updates. Any other ideas? This is becoming unmanageable and the laptop is only 3 months old but virtually useless
