Just bought an OmniBook 5 NGAI 14 only to find Microsoft appears to have hi-jacked the set up procedure.  After the intro screens, instead of booting into Windows it sends you to Microsoft to login to your account. You don't have to have a Microsoft account to run Windows. But I do have an account, have had for many years, so I login, give email address and then it asks for passkey which I don't have. Eventually I persuade it to require password which I enter. Then it wants to confirm my identity! It sends a code, not to my email or mobile phone like every other company does, but to an app run by Microsoft with a monthly sub. which I'm not prepared to countenance.

In short, I can't get into Windows.

Hi  @roger191141,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

know how  it can feel when you just want to start using your new device and end up stuck in account verification loops. Let’s work through this together.

A few clarifying points about the issue:

  • You’re able to reach the Microsoft account login screen, but after entering your password, it insists on identity verification through the Microsoft Authenticator app rather than offering email or SMS codes.
  • You mentioned you eventually got it to accept a password, but the verification step is blocking you from completing setup.
  • Just to confirm: have you already connected the laptop to Wi‑Fi during setup, or is it still offline?

Here are a few  steps you can try right away:

  1. Set up without internet: Restart the laptop, and during setup, disconnect from Wi‑Fi. This often allows you to create a local account instead of forcing Microsoft login.
  2. Use “Sign-in options”: On the Microsoft login screen, look for “Sign-in options” or “Other ways to sign in.” This should let you choose password or SMS/email verification if those are linked to your account.
  3. Check recovery methods: On another device, log into your Microsoft account and confirm that your email and phone number are listed as security info. If they aren’t, adding them will give you more options during setup.

I hope this helps.

After numerous attempts the option for Microsoft to send the code to my email address popped  after which all went as expected. The options to use password and have the code sent to mobile or as email should have appeared at the outset.
