This is Aneesh. I m using HP Pavilion 14-n296tx TouchSmart Notebook PC. Few days back I had an issue in opening file manager. I was unable to open any files or run any application. Then I performed a system check. I got the following error
Hard drive short DST check: Failed
Failure ID: M0E4R1-77986Q-MFPV7G-60SF03
Product ID: J8B57PA#ACJ
How do I solve this issue? Do I need to replace the hard drive? Can I recover all my files? If I should change the hard drive, then can I use that as external storage unit? Is it possible to solve this issue at home or I need to take this notebook to service center? Approximately how much does this repair cost?
System conf: Windows 10, 64 bit

Yes you absolutely need a new hard drive. Yes you can take the old drive, put it in a usb adapter and use it externally. Maybe you can recover data from it, and likely you can recover some of the data maybe not all. It depends on how badly the drive is corrupted. Stop trying to use it you will only make it worse by trying to boot from it.
Here is the Manual:
See p. 63 for hard drive replacement. It is not really easy to do as it requires removal of the top cover.
You have a 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA 2.5 inch hard drive. This would be a good chance to upgrade to a solid state drive. Let us know where you live (country) (India?) and we can direct you to a place to buy the drive (and a usb adapter). Computer parts cost a bit more in India but if you can do this yourself it will cost maybe the equivalent of 75 US dollars for the drive. I am not sure what a technician would charge in India. In the US you could expect maybe $100 in labor charge.
