HP 15-f272wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I encountered flashing black screen and desktop back and forth so I performed hard reset and took long time to get it done.  But it wouldn't start up to Windows from power.  I ran HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI for short test:  The result came in ->  Testing Drive: 1, SMART Check: Passed and Short DST: Failed.   FAILURE ID:  RGFW1W-80VA0X-MFPWMF-60QN03 & PRODUCT ID: NY504UA#ABA  Hard Drive 1.   My laptop is less than 3 years old and got it from Wal-Mart.  I read other threads similar to this situation and guess I will have to buy new laptop then?  Please help and thank you, Kevin.

Sadly to say: Most of the time the 24 char disk failure id indicates the HDD is failing and it needs to be replaced.

Since your machine previously ran Windows 10, you can do a clean install W10 for free by using the media creation tool at the link below.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The tool will allow you to make a bootable installation media (USB/DVD) and you can use installation media to install.

During the installation process if you are asked to enter a product key, check the 'Skip' box and W10 will install and then automatically activate once you are connected to the internet using the key embedded in BIOS of your machine.

Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page. Normally few Windows 10 updates can install nearly all drivers for you.

Regards.

Hi,

The failure id means that "Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure"

So you will need to replace the drive. You can use any brand 2.5" SATA3 Hard Drive (max 2TB because of thickness of drive)

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Internal-Drive-2-5-Inch/dp/B07H28QRKN/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=2...

You could opt for a cheap SSD which would give a boost to performance

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX500-240GB-2-5-Inch-Internal/dp/B07G3KRZBX/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?...

On page 44 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04763947

To reinstall Windows:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Hope it helps,

Thank you for the reply Banhien.  Yes I was trying to save my personal files but it can't go out to my flash drive after it stated NTFB (something) files.  So I was stuck and I need these personal files out before attempting "Set to Factory Defaults".

Thank you for the reply Iomare.   It's interesting to know what caused it until you mentioned.  $33 dollars isn't bad for one thing and I will try to see if I can decide to do this.  I should have save my personal files before the problem came up.  Now it can't go to recovery after attempting backup files into flash drive but I did try and it stated about NTFB files so wouldn't transfer.  I will go ahead to read the the pages you provided the links.  Thank you again.

You're welcome.

The best idea to try to recover files is to attach the Hard Drive internally in a Desktop or use a USB to SATA cable, once you have removed the drive.

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-Adapter-Optimized-EC-SSHD/dp/B011M8YACM/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=...

You will need to go into the "users" folder on the drive and open the folder with your User name. It can take a while for this folder to open (you will need to open as administrator) as the security settings on each file will be automatically modified. So to open the folder can take a few minutes.

Hope it hel[ps,

David

Hi Iomare!  I have try to find different way to retrieve my personal files by using blank USB drive inserted in and use boot order as USB hard disk via BIOS.  But it stated "Boot Device Not Found - Please install an operating system on your hard disk (Hard Disk (3F0)) - F2 System Diagnostics - For more information, please visit HP TechCenter with link provided".     I am trying to put USD flash drive then use boot order for USD hard disk to get Windows Setup but will "repair your computer" at bottom left of Windows Setup in order to use the option to troubleshoot then to use command prompt to find the local disk.  I can use notepad to open from the command prompt but using "Open Interface" from notepad to copy my personal data and paste onto the USB flash drive.  Anyway it doesn't work.

So I wonder if I use the creation tool kit to download Windows 10 from website into USD flash drive on my other computer and insert it to my affected laptop.  Will it erase my personal data after uploading Windows 10 from USD flash drive?  Confusing here.  Thank you for your help though.  Kevin
