I have a HP 15-af100 Notebook PC series its about 6-7 years old, great laptop but now takes 10 minutes from power on to the windows sign-in.

I think its been this way for a while now but can't remember when it first started (I've just replaced BIOS battery and default BIOS settings but still the same. Ran HP PC Hardware Diagnostics > BIOS-System Firmware - all ok)

Hi @tickmatrix,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 15 laptop is taking a long time (10 minutes) to boot up and reach the Windows sign-in screen, there could be several reasons for this slowdown. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix the issue.

  • Check Startup Programs: Sometimes, too many startup programs can slow down your computer's boot time. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager, then go to the "Startup" tab. Disable unnecessary programs from starting up with your computer.
  • Disk Cleanup: Use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files, system cache, and other unnecessary files that might be slowing down your system. Search for "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu and run the tool.
  • Malware Scan: Run a full malware scan using a reputable antivirus or antimalware software. Malware or viruses can significantly slow down your computer's performance.
  • Update Drivers: Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause system slowdowns. Visit HP's official website and download the latest drivers for your laptop model.
  • Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date. Windows updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • Upgrade RAM: If your laptop has low RAM (memory), it can slow down overall performance. Consider upgrading the RAM if your laptop supports it.
  • Hard Drive Health Check: A failing hard drive can lead to slow boot times. Use built-in Windows tools like Check Disk (CHKDSK) to scan and repair any disk issues.
  • Disable Unnecessary Services: Some background services might be consuming resources and causing slow boot times. You can disable unnecessary services through the "Services" application.
  • Clean Up Desktop: If you have a lot of icons and files on your desktop, it can slow down the boot process. Try cleaning up your desktop and organizing files into folders.
  • SSD Upgrade: If your laptop is using a traditional hard drive, consider upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD). SSDs are significantly faster than HDDs and can greatly improve boot times.
  • Reset or Reinstall Windows: If none of the above solutions work, you might consider resetting your Windows installation or performing a clean reinstall of the operating system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Most programs create temp files in a folder called C:\Users\[Your ID]\AppData\Local\Temp. It’s safe to empty out the Temp folder and delete the temp files you find there. Mine had 20GB+ of data that was slowing down the start-up.

you can also type "Storage" in search bar next to start button and select "Storage Settings"
