So a couple of days ago, I received notification that updates for my computer were available, one of which was a bios update. So I ran all of the available updates, and my computer rebooted. Since then, it now takes considerably longer to start up (and shut down), there’s a short (but noticeable) delay between my selecting an application and it then opening, and it makes some weird slightly mangled noice when I start it up.
it just really feels like it’s running… I don’t know… slow.
I tried going back to a previous saved restore point, I did a reset where I kept my files, and then I tried a clean reset, but it’s still doing what I’ve stated above. It’s been a great computer right up til this past weekend, and I’d like to get that back somehow .

Hi @KnightLife,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
BIOS Settings:
- Access your BIOS settings by restarting your computer and pressing the appropriate key (usually F10, Esc, or F2) during startup.
- Check if there are any settings that might have changed or were reset during the update. Specifically, check the boot order and any performance-related settings.
Driver Updates:
- Ensure all your drivers are up-to-date, especially your chipset and graphics drivers.
- Use the HP Support Assistant to check for any additional updates that might have been released after your BIOS update.
System Performance Check:
- Run a system performance diagnostics test to identify any other potential issues. This can be done via the HP Support Assistant or Windows built-in tools.
- Check Task Manager for any processes that might be causing unusual delays or high resource usage during startup.
Windows Power Settings:
- Verify your power settings in Windows to ensure they are optimized for performance, rather than battery saving, which could inadvertently slow down your system.
Revert BIOS Update:
- If the issues persist and are severe, consider reverting to the previous BIOS version if possible. This is usually done through the HP BIOS update and recovery tools. Be mindful that reverting BIOS versions can have its own risks, so it should be done cautiously.
Weird Noises:
- If the computer is making unusual noises, inspect the cooling fans and hardware to ensure nothing is physically damaged or obstructed. Ensure that the noise is not originating from a failing hard drive or SSD.
I hope this helps.

Did all that, and it did help, some. Was still slow and sluggish, and the noise was still distorted.
And then something weird happened.
I dropped something behind my desk, and had to unplug my notebook from the battery charger to reach it. I then rebooted my computer, forgetting it wasn't charging, and what do you know it's working perfectly now. Plugged the power back in, shut down and restarted and still working great.
Thanks for the help.
