W11   -  Spectre X360 Convertible 15-eb0520na

Hello there,

I'm having a problem with my laptop. It will only complete the window bootup when plugged in to the charger.
If I try to start it up on battery power it will switch on, power led lights up HP logo comes up, it loads the log in page,  and then shuts down. The power button then appears dead and unresponsive

If I plug it in, the power button now works, it boots up as normal, I can log in, and once I've done so I can unplug it, and it operates normally.
I bought it as a media player for travelling, so clearly battery operation is it's primary use.
Any ideas as to the problem?

Thanks

Hi @Mykwin,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. Has the laptop recently had a BIOS update or Windows update?
  2. Does the battery percentage seem accurate, or does it jump up/down suddenly?
  3. Has the laptop ever been opened for battery replacement or service?
  4. When the system shuts down on battery at the login screen, does it feel like an instant cut-off (as if power is lost), or a normal shutdown?

These details help determine whether it's a battery issue, firmware glitch, or power controller problem.

Troubleshooting steps you can try right now

1. Perform an Hard Reset

This fixes power controller glitches in many Spectre models.

  1. Shut the laptop down completely
  2. Unplug the charger
  3. Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds
  4. Release it
  5. Try starting on battery only

If it was an EC issue, this often fixes it instantly.

2. Check battery health using HP Diagnostics

Use the built-in HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  1. Power on → repeatedly press F2
  2. Select Component Tests → Power → Battery
  3. Run the “Battery Check”

If you see Replace, Weak, or Failure, then the battery is the cause.

 3. Check battery health inside BIOS

Restart → press Esc → F10 → System Diagnostics
This will also show battery status and voltage readings.

 4. Update critical drivers

On the HP support  site for your Spectre x360 15-eb0520na, update:

  • BIOS
  • Intel Chipset drivers
  • Power Management drivers
  • HP System Control Manager

These can fix faulty power initialization during boot.

5. Turn off Fast Startup

Windows Fast Startup can misread battery status during boot.

  1. Control Panel → Power Options
  2. Choose what the power buttons do
  3. Untick Turn on fast startup
  4. Restart on battery

I hope this helps

Thanks for your extensive reply.

1. Windows was updated to the latest version several weeks ago as advised by Microsoft.

2. The Bios has been updated to the latest version, as advised by the HP Diagnostics tool

3.  The battery has been replaced and passes all the checks in both the disgnostics

4.  It is an instant cut off, not normal shut down.

Troubleshooting

Hard Reset, tried, problem persists

Diagnostics, Battery check passed in both sets of checks
Drivers and Bios updated in HP Diagnostics panel, now reads all up to date.
Fast Startup turned off.

Problem persists.

Dont know if its relevant, but once its shut itself down, the power button will not restart it until it is plugged in again.
Any more thoughts?

Regards

Mike.
