Hi @Ivy76,

Thank you for sharing all those details, and I completely understand how  this must feel especially when you’ve already tried the suggested steps and the issue persists. Since the PIN and password options aren’t appearing as expected on the sign-in page, and the troubleshooting hasn’t resolved it, the best next step would be to have the unit inspected directly.

I kindly recommend reaching out to your nearest HP service center. The technicians there will be able to run a thorough check on the system, identify what’s causing the login issue, and guide you with the right fix. This way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing the device is properly assessed and handled.

To ensure your device receives the appropriate care, we recommend visiting an authorized HP service center. Our certified technicians can provide a thorough diagnosis and offer the best solutions to address the issue.

You can locate the nearest HP service center using our Service Center Locator:

Hiya Deep_World

Thank you... that suggestion would be great if I lived anywhere near a HP Service Center.  🔗 HP Service Center Locator doesn't even have Australia listed !!??

I live 5 hours away from Geraldton WA our closest city.

How do I reset my computer with a password instead of a PIN ?

Cheers

Ivy

Hi @Ivy76,

Thanks for your response.

I completely understand how this must feel, especially when you’re far from a service center. Let’s work through a few things together so you don’t feel stuck.

Switching from PIN to Password

You can sign in with your password instead of a PIN by doing the following:

  1. On the login screen, select Sign-in options just below the password box.
  2. Choose the key icon (this represents your password).
  3. Enter your Microsoft account or local account password.
  4. If you’d like to remove the PIN entirely, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, then under PIN (Windows Hello) select Remove.

This way, you’ll always be able to log in using your password.

 About Windows PowerShell popping up

PowerShell is a built-in Windows tool used for running commands and scripts. If it keeps opening on its own, it could mean:

  • A startup program or scheduled task is triggering it.
  • A recent update or app may have added a script.

You can check this by:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Go to the Startup tab and look for anything unusual that might be launching PowerShell.
  3. Disable items you don’t recognize or don’t need.

Few Additional Steps

  • Run a System File Check: Open Command Prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow. This will repair corrupted system files.
  • Check Updates: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and make sure your system is fully updated.
  • Safe Mode Test: Restart your PC and boot into Safe Mode. If PowerShell doesn’t pop up there, it’s likely a third-party app causing it.

I know it’s not easy when you’re hours away from the nearest city, but these steps should help you get more control over your system without needing to travel.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Ivy76,

Thanks for your response and Thank you for the update and for walking me through the steps you’ve tried so far. You’re doing great!

Yes, please go ahead and download and install the update. While installing, make sure:

  • Your laptop is connected to the charger so it doesn’t power off midway.
  • You don’t interrupt the installation process.
  • Once prompted, allow the system to restart to complete the update.

That restart is important because it finalizes the installation and ensures everything runs smoothly afterward.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Ivy76,

Thank you for reaching out. I’ll guide you through both the System File Check (SFC) and the Safe Mode Test step by step.

1.Running System File Check (SFC)

It looks like the error you saw may have been due to how the command was entered. Here’s how to do it correctly:

  1. Press Windows key + S and type cmd.
  2. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. In the black window that opens, type the following command exactly:
  4. (Make sure there’s a space between sfc and /scannow.)
  5. Press Enter.
  6. The scan will begin. It may take several minutes. Once complete, Windows will show if any issues were found and repaired.

2.Starting Windows in Safe Mode

Safe Mode helps us check if problems are caused by third-party software or drivers. Here’s how to boot into Safe Mode:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. In the System Configuration window, go to the Boot tab.
  3. Under Boot options, check the box for Safe boot and select Minimal.
  4. Click Apply and then OK.
  5. Restart your computer. It will now start in Safe Mode.
    • You’ll notice the screen looks different and only essential drivers are loaded.
  6. To return to normal mode, repeat steps 1–3 and uncheck Safe boot, then restart again.

Once you’ve run the SFC scan and tested in Safe Mode, let us know the results. This will help us determine if the issue is with Windows system files or something else

I hope this helps.
