I have been trying to determine the reason why my mother's 10 year old HP G56 laptop is not working normally after we installed a brand-new battery in it a few days ago
We bought a replacement HP MU06 battery from Amazon after Windows came up with a warning that the battery needed replacing. HP Support Assistant also suggested it should be replaced
The product we bought was said to be a genuine HP Replacement Part.
It arrived by post on 1st February and I fitted the new battery on the same day.
We switched the laptop on without the AC adaptor being plugged in.
I was surprised that the battery had a charge on it. The laptop booted Windows 7 up and everything seemed normal. The AC adaptor was then plugged in and the battery began to charge up. My mum browsed the internet for a while as it was charging. But soon after the battery started charging, it seemed as if it was no longer charging.
When my mum hovered the cursor over the battery icon on the taskbar beside the clock display, it kept displaying the message 61%, plugged in charging. I looked at the laptop for about 15 minutes. During this time, the computer’s battery monitor kept stating the battery was still at 61 percent capacity.
I then checked the new battery by using HP's Battery Check application to see if there was a problem.
For some reason after the battery check ended, there was no information about the battery's health, and I couldn't see any technical info about the battery as I had seen when I tested the old battery.
The only thing I could see was a message that the battery was charging and was at 61 % capacity
Despite not being too happy about that, my mum said to switch the laptop off and see if it would charge up whilst switched off. I selected shut down from Windows' start menu and saw the normal shutting down screen.
Everything seemed normal until the screen went black. I could still hear the computer's fan running on the power light remained on.
I left it a few minutes to see if would shut off by itself as in case a program was still needing to close.
About 10 minutes later nothing had changed.
I held the power button down for over 20 seconds and the fan stopped and the power light went off. After this I tried to start the laptop back up.
This time the laptop wouldn't boot up Windows at all. It just displayed a HP logo.
The Press Esc to enter start up appeared, but if I pressed Esc nothing happened at all despite waiting over 5 minutes. It was completely unresponsive. I shut the computer off and reinstalled the old battery.
Once the original factory-fitted, battery was back in the laptop Windows 7 could boot up perfectly.
I eventually found the new battery could only boot up Windows if the laptop was shut down cleanly after having had the old battery in it before
I ran another test on the new battery using Windows' power.cfg application. I saved the results. The most surprising thing was that the report from power.cfg mentioned the battery's chemistry was NiMH and not Li-ion.There is a logo printed on the new battery's casing that states the battery is Li-ion
I'm not sure why this problem is occurring.
I would be grateful for any help or advice about rectifying this unusual problem.Or whether we should maybe return the new battery?

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is not booting correctly after installing the new battery.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
It seems like the battery you have purchased is not compatible with the computer. I recommend you return the battery and purchase the correct one and this should take care of the issue.
Also, you can try reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under the device manager.
Here is how you do it.
Step 1: Click the Windows “Start” button and right-click “Computer.”
Step 2: Click “Manage,” then “Device Manager.”
Step 3: Click the “Batteries” section. A list of devices will appear.
Step 4: Right-click the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” device and click “Uninstall.”
Step 5: Click the “Action” menu item and “Scan for Hardware Changes” to reinstall the driver.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
