Hi @BaronvonZ
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw has stopped scanning and you are unable to scan from the flatbed or the computer, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue:
1. Check Printer Connection
- USB: Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer via the USB cable if using a wired connection. Try switching USB ports to rule out any connection issues.
- Wi-Fi: If you're using a wireless connection, ensure both the printer and computer are connected to the same network. You can check the printer's network status from its control panel or print a network configuration page.
2. Restart Printer and Computer
- Restart the Printer: Turn off your printer, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart the Computer: Restarting your computer can help resolve software or connectivity issues.
3. Check for Error Messages on the Printer Display
- Check the printer’s display for any error messages or warning lights that may indicate an issue.
- If there are any error messages related to scanning or other issues, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve them.
4. Ensure Proper Scanner Setup
- Scan from the Printer: Go to the printer’s control panel and select Scan or Scan to PC if available. Make sure the option to scan to the computer is set up correctly.
- Check Flatbed: Make sure there is nothing blocking the scanner bed, and that the lid is properly closed. Sometimes, the scanner won't work if the lid is not fully closed.
5. Check Scanner Settings in HP Software
- HP Smart or HP Scan Software: Ensure that the HP Smart or HP Scan software is installed on your computer. You can download it from HP's official site.
- Open the HP Smart app, go to Scan, and try scanning from there.
- If you’re using Windows Scan, search for "Windows Scan" in the Start menu and try scanning directly from there.
6. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Update Drivers: Ensure your printer’s drivers are up to date. Go to the HP Support page and search for your printer model to download the latest drivers for Windows 11.
- Reinstall Drivers: If updating doesn't help, try reinstalling the drivers.
- Go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer, click Remove Device, and then restart your computer.
- After the restart, go back to Printers & Scanners, click Add a Printer or Scanner, and reinstall the printer
I hope this helps.

I have no clue what the response has to do with my post. I have an error code on a laptop that ran win 8.0. model # and operating system should be self explanatory.
Contacting HP support is of no use....they have deemed the laptop obsolete and suggested I look at the community forums for help. I had noticed that others who posted their error codes were sometimes able to get the needed numeric code to unlock the boot cycle lock..

Hi @BaronvonZ,
It sounds like you're facing an issue where your laptop has been locked due to a BIOS password, and you're seeing an error code like 84298946. This is typically a security feature that’s intended to prevent unauthorized access, especially in cases where the BIOS password is forgotten or entered incorrectly multiple times.
Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Use the Unlock Code (if available)
- When you get the error code like 84298946, it’s often a key for unlocking the BIOS.
- If you go to the HP BIOS Password Generator website, you can input this error code to get the unlock code. This is a common method, but it’s not available for all models.
- Visit: HP BIOS Password Generator and enter the error code (in your case, 84298946).
- This may give you the numeric unlock code to bypass the BIOS lock.Reset BIOS Password via HP Backdoor
Some HP laptops have a backdoor password that can be used to reset the BIOS password:
- If you’ve exhausted other options, you can try accessing the BIOS by pressing the ESC key or F10 during boot-up. Sometimes, older HP laptops have backdoor methods where a default password is used, though this varies depending on the laptop model.
4. Perform a Hard Reset
If you are still unable to unlock the system:
- Power down the laptop.
- Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and AC power, then try booting the laptop again to see if that resolves the lock issue.
I hope this helps.
