Has the error message "The Selected Boot Device Failed"  Press <Enter> to continue which does nothing except restart the process all over again. 

 

I made it into the diagnostics finally and it shows Hard Drive Failure code as follows.

 

QE12MX-8KD95V-MFPUQJ-60QW03

 

any thoughts or fixes? anyone knw what the code means?

 

P.S. this all started after the latest Win 10 update.

Hi:

 

If your notebook is under warranty, contact HP support with the failure code, and they will tell you how to proceed.

99 times out of 100, when you get a hard drive failure code, it means you have to replace the hard drive, and reinstall the operating system.

 

So, if your notebook is not under warranty, you will have to pay HP a good deal of money to be told as much.

 

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

 

The hard drive removal and replacement procedures can be found in chapter 6.

You may want to take this opportunity to install a solid state drive (SSD) instead of a conventional hard drive.

 

If you don't need a lot of space you can get a decent brand SSD pretty reasonably.

 

I have this one for example in a couple of my HP notebooks and desktop PC's.

To reinstall the operating system, if you don't have recovery media you made, and don't want to pay HP for recovery media, you can make your own W10 installation media on another Windows PC by using the media creation tool at the link below.

The tool will allow you to make a bootable W10 installation flash drive (you will need a 4 GB flash drive for this).

 

The software will work with the W10 product key in your PC's BIOS and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

 

Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page.

I was really hoping to not have to replace the hard drive.  It's my daughters laptop and she downloaded a game without permission because it was free then Whala. Hard Drive crash, so game or Win 10 update not sure which but somthing messed it up.

Well, you can always try the F11 factory reset option and see what happens.

Or you can try making the W10 installation media and see if W10 installs.

 

If neither option works, then the code you received has to be a hard drive failure code that indicates the hard drive has to be replaced.
