For a few weeks I have found that the touchpad on my laptop is not working as it used to.   I am no longer able to edit photos and using the touchpad to scroll up and down the screen is also not working.   The only way the laptop will scroll is by using the bar on the right-hand side of the screen.   I have researched how to solve the problem and seem to be going round in circles!   One suggestion says make sure the touchpad is enabled by going to settings, bluetooth and devices, then toggling touchpad is switched on.   But my screen does not have an on and off button!!!!    In desperation.....can anyone help me?   Thank you.

Hi @Kudos24542,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand how concerning it can be when your HP laptop touchpad is no longer working properly in Windows 11, especially when gestures like two-finger scrolling and touchpad functionality for tasks such as photo editing have stopped working. I'll be glad to help.

If your touchpad no longer supports scrolling, gestures, or precise cursor control, the issue is commonly caused by:

  • A missing or corrupted touchpad driver.
  • An outdated Synaptics or ELAN driver after a Windows update.
  • Touchpad settings being disabled or unavailable.
  • Windows using a generic mouse driver instead of the correct touchpad driver.

The absence of a Touchpad On/Off toggle in Windows Settings can also indicate that the correct touchpad driver is not installed.

Step 1: Install the Correct HP Touchpad Driver

The correct touchpad driver restores advanced features such as two-finger scrolling, multi-touch gestures, and smooth cursor control.

  1. Visit the Official HP Support page.
  2. Enter your exact HP laptop model (for example, HP Pavilion 15-fd1000).
  3. Select Windows 11 (64-bit).
  4. Expand Driver – Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices.
  5. Download and install the available Synaptics Touchpad Driver or ELAN Touchpad Driver.
  6. Restart the computer after the installation completes.

Step 2: Check Touchpad Settings

If the driver is installed correctly, Windows should display the touchpad settings.

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Verify that the touchpad is enabled.

If you do not see a Touchpad option or an On/Off toggle, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Update the Touchpad Driver Manually

Windows may be using a generic driver that does not support all touchpad features.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click the listed pointing device and select Update driver.
  4. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  5. Choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers.
  6. If available, select HID-compliant touchpad or Microsoft Precision Touchpad, then complete the installation.

Step 4: Allow Windows to Reinstall the Driver

If the touchpad still does not function correctly, reinstalling the driver can resolve software corruption.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the touchpad device and select Uninstall device.
  3. If the option is available, select Delete the driver software for this device.
  4. Restart your laptop.

Windows should automatically detect the hardware and install a compatible touchpad driver during startup.

After completing these steps:

  • The touchpad should function normally.
  • Two-finger scrolling and touchpad gestures should be restored.
  • Windows should display the Touchpad settings and related options.

If the issue continues, please let us know:

  • The exact model of your HP laptop.
  • Whether the touchpad moves the cursor but only gestures are missing, or if the touchpad is completely unresponsive.
  • Whether the issue started after a recent Windows 11 update.

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to the touchpad driver, Windows configuration, or the touchpad hardware itself.

Have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
