Hi @wyndeway,

Thank you for your query!

I grasp that your computer was continually freezing and very slow. When you checked Device Manager  you see error 31 on a USB controller.  This started after down grading to Windows 8.1.  To assist you more efficiently, I will need the precise model of Envy DV7 do you have? HP Notebook PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number, Serial Number or Product Number?.

Did you do a roll back from Windows 10 to Windows or did you reinstall from a retail copy or do a recovery?  Have you done all your Windows updates, after the downgrade?  Have you run the  HP Support Assistant

Try this for the USB:

  • Go to Device Manager
  • Right click on the USB controller with the error
  • Choose uninstall and delete.
  • Restart your notebook.
  • Open Device Manger and click on Action
  • Click scan for hardware changes.

Please let me know the outcome.

I deleted the USB Controller with the error 31, restarted computer as requested.  I then scaned for hardware changes and nothing came up.  I guess we will see how it goes.  BTW, I did not have WIndows 10 but had 8.0 and upgraded to 8.1 when the probelm arose.  I have not liked either Windows 8.0 or 8.1 to date.

TY for your help.  Greatly appreciated.
