OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-xf0000 (758Q9AV)

My laptop recently turned off on me and I couldn’t turn on for a few hours which I think was from overheating and now when ever I shut down or it goes to sleep I am unable to turn it back on, I left it in my bag and it got hot and the fans turned on so I know that it’s on but I can’t see the screen and the power button isn’t emitting a light, so do you have any idea if it’s a software or hardware problem

@Alex87267, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your laptop is experiencing a significant issue, likely related to overheating. Given that it gets hot and the fans activate even when it should be off, here are some steps to help diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:

Basic Checks:

  1. Check for External Display:
    • Connect your laptop to an external monitor using HDMI or DisplayPort.
    • If the external display works, the issue may be with your laptop's screen or display cable.
  2. Force Shutdown and Restart:
    • Hold the power button for 30 seconds to force a shutdown.
    • Disconnect all peripherals (charger, USB devices, etc.).
    • Wait 10 minutes, then try turning it back on.
  3. Battery Reset:
    • If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect the battery and charger.
    • If the battery is internal, look for a pinhole reset option or consider manually disconnecting the battery if you're comfortable.
  4. Perform a CMOS Reset (if possible):
    • Disconnect the laptop from power.
    • Open the bottom panel (if you're comfortable doing so).
    • Unplug the CMOS battery (the small round battery on the motherboard) for 5 minutes, then reconnect it.

Advanced Checks:

  1. BIOS Recovery Attempt:
    • Press and hold Win + B (or Win + V) while pressing the Power button for 10-20 seconds.
    • If the BIOS recovery screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Thermal Protection Mode Activation:
    • Since your laptop overheated, it might be stuck in a thermal protection state.
    • Allow the laptop to cool down completely (leave it unplugged for a few hours).
    • Try turning it on without the charger first, then try with the charger.
  3. Check for Loose Display Cable (If Possible):
    • If the fans spin but there’s no display, the screen connection inside might be loose.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

@Alex87267, Thank you for your response.

You're welcome! Since the BIOS recovery worked briefly, but the laptop failed again, it definitely points to a hardware issue—likely power delivery, motherboard, or overheating-related damage. Given that the power button doesn’t light up, the laptop may not be consistently receiving power or might be stuck in a protection mode.

Since HP service team is picking it up for offsite repair, that's the best course of action.

In the meantime, avoid using it or trying too many restarts to prevent further damage. Hopefully, they get it fixed quickly! 😊

I hope this helps!
