Microsoft Windows 11

When on AC power and with the primary battery fully charged, an unexplained black screen and shut down occurs - can be after 10 mins, 30 mins or sometimes an hour or two. Then when restarted the screen shows error 601. Hit Return to continue start up and Windows starts OK; battery % shows 0% for a short while before returning to show 100% within just a few minutes (battery is at 100% and computer has been running from the AC adaptor all the time before the incident). I checked the BIOS is up to date. I installed and ran UEFI diagnostics: battery and power diagnostics all pass. PC can run on battery alone ok for 3.5 - 4 hours and recharges from below 15% to 100% in around 90 mins, so this, along with the diagnostics, suggests the battery and charging are good but the computer can randomnly and momentarily trigger a battery error

Hi @PeterKG21,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you've already taken some good steps to troubleshoot the issue. However, the recurring battery error (error 601) and the sudden shutdown with a black screen indicate that there might be a more complex problem. Here are some additional steps you can take to further investigate and potentially resolve the issue.

Check Power Settings: Ensure that your power settings in Windows are configured correctly. Go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options" and check if there are any settings that might be causing the issue. You may want to reset your power plan settings to default.

Update Drivers: Make sure that all your drivers, especially the graphics and power-related drivers, are up to date. Visit the HP website for your specific model and download the latest drivers available.

Battery Calibration: Sometimes, recalibrating the battery can help. To do this, discharge the battery completely until the laptop shuts down, then recharge it to 100%. This process helps the system relearn the actual battery capacity.

Windows Updates: Ensure that your operating system is fully updated. Windows updates often include fixes for various issues, and keeping your system up to date may resolve compatibility problems.

Event Viewer: Check the Windows Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings that coincide with the times of the black screen and shutdown. This can provide more detailed information about what might be causing the issue.

System File Checker (SFC): Run the System File Checker tool to check for and repair corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following command.

sfc /scannow

Malware Scan: Perform a thorough malware scan using your antivirus software to rule out any malicious software causing the issue.

Hardware Diagnostics: Run comprehensive hardware diagnostics, not just limited to the battery and power components. This could include RAM, hard drive, and other system components.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Alden4 Thanks for the comprehensive suggestions.

Check Power Settings; Update Drivers and Windows Updates all done and OK.

I’d run the full System hardware diagnostics and found no issues. Also I have AV/ Malware protection running and frequently updated.

Before my original post I’d fully discharged and recharged the battery so guess the battery calibration is now OK. I haven’t seen the problem since the date I did that so maybe simply that fixed it - time will tell..

I also checked the event viewer and there were a couple of warnings around the times I’d seen the issues but honestly don’t know whether these were related - I can get more details if the problem resurfaces.

After waiting a few days to see if the fault was clear I also ran the SFC check, which did find and repair one or more corrupt files. So now I’m optimistic this issue has been fixed and I really appreciate your response and suggestions. Due to the intermittent nature of the issue I’d been seeing I’m going to let it run another day or so before finally saying it’s closed. Thanks again
