HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 17-cd1275ng
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I have an HP gaming laptop.

In it is an M2 512GB and an SSD 2TB.

The installation is ok when I remove the 2TB SSD.

When an update from Windows comes, it always fails and wants to install on the 2TB SSD.

The start partition is on C and the laptop starts correctly.

What can I do to make the installation of the update work?

Always taking out the 2 TB SSD is not a solution, is it?

Thanks for your Ideas

Jörg

Hi @Fritschie,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re encountering a frustrating issue with Windows updates failing to install when your 2TB SSD is connected. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

Check Disk Health: First, ensure that the 2TB SSD is functioning correctly. You can use tools like CrystalDiskInfo or the built-in Windows chkdsk command to check for errors.

Update SSD Firmware: Check if there’s any firmware update available for your SSD. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with Windows updates.

Set the Boot Order: Ensure that your boot order in BIOS/UEFI settings prioritizes the M2 SSD over the 2TB SSD. Sometimes, Windows tries to install updates to the drive that is listed first in the boot order.

Change Drive Letter Assignments: You can try removing the drive letter from the 2TB SSD temporarily and see if Windows updates will then install correctly. To do this:

  • Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc).
  • Right-click on the 2TB SSD and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths."
  • Remove the drive letter and apply the changes.

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. This tool can sometimes fix underlying issues with updates.

Install Updates Manually: If updates continue to fail, consider downloading and installing them manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog. This can help bypass issues with the automatic update process.

Check for Partition Issues: Ensure that your partitions are set up correctly. You may want to verify that the primary partition is marked as active.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Alden4,

Thanks for your ideas, but unfortunately it's not that simple. I have already tried many things.

It's not exactly frustrating, but you are supposed to install updates.

My M2 and also my SSD have no problems because I have checked them very often.

I can't change anything in the UEFI there is only the OS Boot Manager and my M2 in Manager.

The Windows Update troubleshooter is also not intelligent and has not helped me.

Windows update after downloading from Windows has also been tried.

But nothing helped, the PC restarts to install the updates. it fails again and then everything goes back to the beginning.

The partitions are also all ok, as the laptop starts and runs normally.

If I “diskmgmt.msc” then the path to my data changes and messes up even more ?

Hi @Fritschie,

Thank you for your response,

It seems you've already gone through a range of troubleshooting steps, but the problem persists, especially with Windows updates failing to install after a restart when the SSD is connected. Let's dive a bit deeper.

Additional Troubleshooting Suggestions:

Check for Conflicting Drivers or Software:

  • There may be a driver or piece of software that conflicts with the update process. Try booting the system into Safe Mode and then attempt the Windows update again. Safe Mode loads only essential drivers and might bypass any software that's blocking the update.

Disable or Disconnect the 2TB SSD Temporarily:

  • If the SSD itself isn't faulty but is somehow interfering with the update process, try disconnecting the SSD from the system entirely. Once disconnected, attempt the Windows update again. If it works without the SSD, reconnect it afterward and see if it causes further issues.

Check Windows Update Logs:

  • Investigate deeper by reviewing the Windows Update logs. You can access them via the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc). Navigate to Windows Logs > System and filter for events related to Windows Update. The logs can provide specific error codes or details about what exactly is failing during the installation process.

Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM Tools:

  • There could be underlying system file corruption affecting the update process.
  • Run SFC and DISM to check and repair potential system file issues.
    • Run Command Prompt as an administrator:
      • sfc /scannow (This scans and attempts to repair corrupted system files)
      • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (This repairs issues with the Windows image)

Use the Windows Update Assistant:

  • Download the Windows Update Assistant from Microsoft's website. It’s an alternative tool that can often resolve update issues. It checks system compatibility and can perform the update outside of the typical Windows Update process.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This can help determine if a background process is interfering with Windows updates.
    • You can initiate a clean boot by typing msconfig into the Run dialog (Win + R), going to the Services tab, checking Hide all Microsoft services, and disabling everything else. Then, attempt the update again.

Reassign Drive Letters Carefully:

  • If the drive letter assignment is causing confusion in the path to your data, consider using Disk Management to ensure no conflicting drive letters are assigned. Be cautious with reassigning drive letters as this can temporarily affect software and system paths if any rely on a specific drive.

Windows Repair Install (In-Place Upgrade):

  • If none of the above works, you might need to perform a Windows repair install. This process reinstalls Windows without deleting your files or installed programs. You can initiate this by downloading the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, selecting Upgrade this PC now, and following the prompts.

Each of these steps targets potential underlying causes, and depending on your setup, one might get you closer to resolving the update issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hallo Alden4,

Thanks for the further ideas.

I will continue to check what you have written to me.

There is still no Win24H2 via the Media Creation Tool.

When it is there I will investigate the matter further.

I have now stopped the updates.

I'll get back to you when I have new results.

Alden4,

I've now taken out my 2 TB SSD and replaced my 512GB M2 with a 4TB M2.

Now hopefully this problem will no longer occur.

However, another problem has arisen with “Firmware -System Firmware”

When starting the laptop, the message "System updates are underway. Please keep your device onand plugged in"

This message was in English at startup, but otherwise my laptop speaks German.

This message is there for 10 minutes and nothing happens.

Only by switching it off and then on again is it gone and it starts.

But in the device manager under firmware there is a triangle with ! in it, indicating that something is missing.

If I delete the driver, the game starts again as described with the message.

Thanks Jörg from Germany
